I cannot figure out ZR 32 bit float when shooting R3D

p.1 #1 · I cannot figure out ZR 32 bit float when shooting R3D

I'm an experienced videographer (RED, Nikon, Canon, Lumix, etc.) but cannot figure out ZR 32 bit float audio when shooting R3D. I understand that audio needs to be controlled manually. But I've tried three separate mics which all work in non-R3D modes. But the audio when using those mics in R3D shooting is barely there, even when the input is turned to 18 out of 20, and also when using the internal mic. The meters seem to be showing a decent input signal, but R3D audio is mostly inaudible unless I turn speakers WAY up, causing the distortion that isn't supposed happen with 32 bit float.

Anyone have a recommended workflow for 32 bit R3D audio? The Nikon "professional" manual is, of course, entirely useless.

Thanks ahead of time for any suggestions....

Ron

Hey Ron-

I am actually really surprised to read this- I have found 32 bit audio to be the one thing I found almost stupid proof out of the box with Nikon. Is all I did was enable it and use it.

I am saying that only because its been that simple so something is 100% off for you espcially since you know what you are doing-

Lets get a stupid question out of the way-

32 bit audio is on correct? Are you using wide range?
Attenuator off?
Wind noise (mine is off)

I have used internal mic and very very very pleased with it- Clipped audio can be pulled down no problem-
Also the new Nikon Mic which was plug and play- Regadless, Audio has been great at a setting of 10 and I haven't touched it since- Just in post.

So you either have a bad setting or a problem with your camera (bug maybe, hardware)- Happy to help here though-

Maybe try a factory reset and just turn on 32bit audio- Maybe there is a buried setting somewhere you haven't realized you changed.

RustyRus, thank you. Yes, I've got the ZR configured exactly the way you suggest. And I've reset the system multiple times.

(And, of course, my NLE is Resolve, latest version.) I've tried the internal mic, a Zoom 32 bit float shotgun, a Rode mic and a recent Hollyland lav, all using the unbalanced mic input. Again, signal strength on the meters looks good. I assume I'm missing some critical but obscure setting (like set the language to Greek.) Or does Resolve require some special settings for R3D+32bit float? Perhaps I've set Resolve incorrectly? But video (with the right LUT) looks great.

When you said that the system seems idiot-proof, I immediately resonated with that as I can sometimes be an idiot.

How does the proxy file sound? (the mp4 that gets generated)?
