p.1 #1 · Great Lakes Lighthouse

Hello,
I thought I would share this photo with the Black And White forum.
I posted it in the City, Street and Architecture forum a while back.
It was taken at Lake Michigan during a 30-40 knot gale out of the west.
It shows how treacherous the Great lake can be.
Especially in November.
It's hard to believe the tragic loss of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald was 50 years ago.
Twenty-nine lost souls.
Regards,
John

A common and often photographed lighthouse, with the crashing waves. Good timing on this one.
Just think if it was on Lake Superior, where the waves are way worse, way more powerful. The Edmund found out the hard way, as did many a ship and freighter...

This is interesting, looks like the lighthouse is dry and this is the first wave to give it a good smack!
The stillness of the lighthouse and the powerful movement of the wave make for a great battle, awesome capture in B&W.

Thank you Karl.
There is concrete structure in front of this lighthouse that is designed to try diverting a direct wave strike on the building. It resembles a ships bow.
On this day, I spent 6 hours and shot more than 2200 images. I was moving back and forth from my vehicle to the beach trying to dodge rain squalls while watching the radar and marine weather reports.
The gales remained between 30-40 knots out of the west the entire day and the waves were quite impressive.
I noticed just before this photo, there was a sudden drop in barametric pressure and the sun slightly broke out of the overcast.
During this time, which lasted about a minute, a series of HUGE waves came in.
I was fortunate to capture this shot within a series of about seven photos that were similar to this one.
It was perfect light and nature provided the brief awesome show.
