It's human nature. The cameras and lenses are the "sexy" gear that people lust over and pin their hopes and dreams on.
Look at the car enthusiasts who don't buy great tires, the audiophiles who ignore room treatments, the gourmands who prize flashy knives and copper pots over ingredient pedigree, etc.
