p.3 #1 · Cosina Voigtländer revived 28/2 Ultron II, 35/2 Ultron II
From current active Voigtländer VM lineup it's quite hard to pick any lenses that would be obvious candidates for discontinuation in the next year or two. If some lens gets a newly improved version, the old version would usually be discontinued first so this could happen even if the current version is popular enough. I think the lenses where they have multiple versions in production currently might be candidates for version reduction at some point.
- Color Skopar 28/2.8 Type I and Type II --> I would guess that Type I will be discontinued at some point and Type II would be kept for the long run (the most logical pairing for 28/2.8 Type I is 40/2.8 and that has been discontinued already and it seems that Type II has been more popular in Japan)
- I think 50/1.5 Nokton II could be a candidate for a new version replacement sometime in the next 1-2 years

Honestly, I didn't even realize the Ultron 35mm f/2 Type II had been discontinued. It's one of my favorite Cosina lenses.
I'm also glad they re-introduced the 28mm f/2 Ultron. It's nearly as good as the APO version while being noticeably more compact. We really are spoiled with so many great options these days!

I was wondering why the 28mm ultron has gone up in price on the used market, I got one a few years ago for $450 and hadn't pulled the trigger on one for my current kit yet because of the price increase hopefully this makes things a bit more reasonable.

This is an interesting move by CV. It shows they’re quite responsive to feedback, and that the CV 35/1.7 must not have been that popular. Too bad, still a great option, it could use rehousing though with modern CV ergo

Any regrets selling your silver Ultron yet, or did you have a 2nd copy? Would have looked good on that Zf.

I don't, because I prefer the CV 28mm f/2 APO-Lanthar for my well-corrected, modern rendering needs at 28mm. The Ultron is certainly smaller, but the weight difference is surprisingly minor (brass vs aluminum). When adapted to the Nikon Zf, both lenses actually balance and look quite good. The APO's larger size also becomes less of an issue on a mirrorless body since there is no rangefinder framelines to obstruct.

Also, I forgot to mention that one of the reasons I let the Ultron go is because I already have the silver 28mm f/2.8 Color-Skopar (Type II). That gives me the same silver aesthetic for the Zf or Leica M10-R Safari, while still being a very high-performing, ultra-compact 28mm option...So in practice, it made sense for me to keep the silver 28mm f/2.8 Color-Skopar for ultra-compact use, and the black 28mm f/2 APO-Lanthar for ultimate performance in black.

Ah, yeah, that does make a lot more sense. Way too redundant to keep all 3.

Rehousing would be one thing but it would still be a long design for a 35mm M mount lens. Would love to see it get the redesign treatment that the 35/1.2 v3 brought for that model (considerable size reduction without negative optical performance consequences). The Thypoch Ksana 35/2 shows that modern rendering in a compact 35/2 package is possible (not commenting about copy variation).
A likely problem for the 35/1.7 is that it's kind of in no man's land stuck between 35/1.5 and 35/2, plus there's the 35/1.2, 35/1.4, 35/2.5, 35/3.5...
I'd be happy to see a 35/2 v2 with the 35/1.7's rendering characteristics. Maybe that's the Ksana.

Yeah, but the reason the CV 35/1.7 is special (to me) is it actually works well across sensor stacks unlike the other compact well corrected 35mm rangefinder lenses that are F2 below.
The CV 35/1.2 v3 and v4 work decently on both, but I wouldn’t say it’s a high performing optic. And I never like the rendering of the CV’s modern f1.2 lenses very much.
But yes, the CV 35/1.7 is a bit long. Maybe from a rendering perspective, the Kasana will be close, but for technical IQ I am not overly impressed. We haven’t seen Fred’s review, but Bastian is always reliable for this type of thing. I haven’t shot the Kasana yet, but I will at some point.
“On the Leica M10 this 35mm 2.0 shows a solid albeit not amazing performance, as at f/2.0 the whole image is a bit soft. Stopping down to f/2.8 increases the contrast noticeably. For the midframe to look very good f/4.0 is needed and for the corners f/5.6.”
The CV 35/1.7 offers pretty excellent resolution across the field wide open. And global contrast is general high. Micro-contrast less so. In terms or resolution, the CV 35/1.7 is quite ahead.
If CV is listening to customers, we should start a petition so they start remaking their Bessa’s. I’d love a r4m remake.

Would be nice if they kept the optics but updated the casing to aluminium, changed the front from chrome to matt matching finish, and made the focus tab a tad deeper.
p.3 #14 · Cosina Voigtländer revived 28/2 Ultron II, 35/2 Ultron II
I would appreciate that change as well, but I suspect it would require a redesign of the barrel, at least it was the case for the f/1.2 Nokton lenses, which would add development and manufacturing costs. I don't think that's the direction Cosina is aiming for this re-release.
That said, a simpler solution might be to keep the existing design but switch the barrel material to aluminum and replace the chrome-plated brass front ring with anodized aluminum. I think that would be a very welcome change for many users who dislike the extra weight that come from the brass barrel and chrome nose.

This would be great to see. The 35/1.5 Nokton Type 1 is one of my favorite Voigtlander lenses because it's both a high performing lens and so light it almost disappears on the camera body. Same with the 50/2.2 Skopar and 50/3.5 APO Lanthar.
p.3 #16 · Cosina Voigtländer revived 28/2 Ultron II, 35/2 Ultron II
There are no changes at all with the re-releases, Cosina only brought back the original product pages and added a text that says that the lenses are re-released from 3rd of July and shops listed them again for pre-order.
