p.1 #1 · Looking for R1 Sports Ninjas...how to "Switch to registered AF func"?

I am stumped and need some help from the R1 sports shooters out there. I have tried to get the solution from GROK and other AI apps but despite the R1 being in the wild for over a year, there is not a lot of content on this subject, specific to this camera. The R1 menus are just different enough from the other Rs to generate a lot of AI hallucinations.

I shoot HS and college soccer, and want to assign the "Switch to registered AF func." to the AE Lock button. The goal is to use two back buttons to access three different AF setups quickly:

AF-ON (5): Half press, Single point AF, Action Priority Off - for situations where I know I can keep focus lock on my target even in a group of players

AF-ON (5): Full press, Whole Area AF/Tracking, Action Priority Off - for a situation when the Subject is relatively isolated, running down the line, or a free kick, goal kick, etc, and I let the camera follow the subject.

AE Lock: Whole Area AF/Tracking, Action Priority On/Soccer - for situations in the box/net with lots of players and the ball is moving fast. Set pieces, headers in a group, keeper defending a free kick, etc. I want to give the scene to the camera and let it follow the ball to the conclusion of the play.

Steps I have taken:
1.) Identified and set the AF functions I want to be active when I press AE LOCK: Whole Area AF, Whole Area Tracking, Action Priority ON, Sport/Soccer, Subject People, Eye Detection.

2.) Register/recall AF-related Settings (AF Tab, 7th page). Register Settings, highlight SET1, SET, Check all boxes but Register people priority and the last 5 options in this 'Reg Settings' menu, OK, MENU

3.) Assign "Switch to registered AF func" to AE LOCK: Customize Controls Tab, Customize buttons for shooting, scroll to AE LOCK button, select 'Switch to registered AF func'.

At this point, I expect to have the option to select SET1 that I created in Step 2, so that when I press the AE LOCK, these SET1 settings are active. But there is no option to do this when I assign the function to this button. I see that I can press INFO, but it brings up the same settings page I customized in Step 2, except none of the options have check marks.

How do I assign my custom AF settings SET1 to the AE Lock button?

My goal is to access Action Priority/Soccer for specific situations quickly. If I leave it on all the time, it can pull me off the player I want in focus and onto the player with the ball, or the one nearest to me. I have had many 'great' shots go to the trash can because my player was fuzzy, while the opponent was sharp as a tack. Assigning it to AE Lock would be ideal if I could get it to work.

Any thoughts/help would be appreciated.

For researching this using AI, have you tried uploading the PDF advanced user guide (available on Canon's website) and asking question in the context of the document? Maybe this could focus the returned information some more.

I don't have the R1 and never use the register/ recall settings, so can be of limited help.

As far as I understand (for at least some of the R cameras), assigning the 'recall' to a button requires one to keep the button pressed for those settings to be active. In that case it would mean that if you succeed in what you want to assign set 1 to the recall function, you would need to press "AE lock" make the recalled settings active but then need to activate AF with the button you use for AF, while still keeping the AE lock button pressed.

Given your scenario, I think you have to customize the "AE lock" button with assigning AF to it and through the "info" button configure the settings you want (and have now set to set 1). If you do that, the AE lock button will start AF with the settings you want, every time you press it.

In Youtube videos I saw over time about the setup of R-cameras, dual back button focus was always used by assigning AF to the respective buttons and tweak settings per button through the options shown through the "info" button.

What I remember seeing about register/ recall people assigned it for example to the "DOF-button" so they could use it with back button AF (since they can operatate the buttons with different fingers) or to a back button when they AF with the shutter button (also enabling them to operate with two fingers at the time).

Other than AI, you may search Youtube to find some Youtubers explaining how they set up their cameras, for example use search terms like "set up dual button autofocus" or "registered shooting functions".

Furthermore i get the impression that the registering/ recall of the AF functions may just be intended for a menu setting. So you can store some AF settings and if you recall them, they are set as the main AF mode for the general AF start. Like you can select the AF area as a general setting and it will be set for the regular AF start button.

I use 3 back button focus and configure it that way as well. Assigning each button it to AF and then customize each button how I want it to act in the sub menu.

I happen to have an R1 CPS loaner this weekend and had a quick look to see if there was anything obvious. And it doesn't appear you missed something.

What you want to do would have been easily possible when assigning AF behavior via the 'INFO' submenu to one of the back buttons, IF whoever decided the assignable AF settings would have included the Action Priority feature. But they didn't.

It appears, from reading the R1 AF guide (https://cam.start.canon/en/C018/guide/html/AF-04_Action_0010.html), that Canon's intent is that you have to turn Action Priority on/off with another button. Therefore in your case, set up the AE Lock button to the various AF parameters you want for Action Priority and assign Action Priority to another button, perhaps one of the front two. Action Priority can also be assign to the function button on the lens, if your lens has one.

The register/recall feature seems to just be a way to save a bunch of different AF configurations for later recall. When recalling one of these, it would act as the 'main' AF parameter set for any AF buttons that haven't been custom configured (via the 'INFO' submenu). The Switch to Registered AF func augments those recallable configurations, but doesn't actually recall any of them. It allows a secondary set of AF parameters to be set for use by the same button(s) normally used for AF with the main AF parameters set when the button it is assigned to, is pressed. Switch to Registered AF in itself does not activate AF, it just recalls that specific set of AF settings (separate from the bank of registered AF settings). This would appear to be a feature for those who prefer to keep AF on the shutter release button (which does not have the 'INFO' submenu AF configuration options), or prefer to only use one back button for AF yet need to switch to different AF parameters sets quickly.
