Another confusing item (at least for me) setting up my SL3. I'm only shooting M-mount lenses for the time being. I have a generic M to L adapter. Lenses seem to focus well and produce nice images. However, I'm struggling with Auto ISO. I've set Auto ISO parameters to go as high as 12500 ISO. I set ISO to auto and floating ISO turned on.
When the SL3 is in Manual mode - Auto ISO functions as I would expect. I dial in shutter speed and set aperture and can see the ISO value change with changing light, changing aperture, changing shutter speed. Good enough.
When the SL3 is in Aperture Priority mode, Auto ISO functions differently. On the LCD I will see something like ISO(A) 100. I make sure that ISO is not set to fixed. However, changing aperture and/or shutter speed has no effect on the ISO setting. It's locked at ISO 100. So, in a room in my house, I'm getting shutter speeds in seconds since ISO is not changing.
Please enlighten me as to what I am doing wrong. This shouldn't be so hard, should it?
Can you clarify use case / expectation difference for when using aperture mode vs. manual mode (i.e. rationale for shooting expectation).
The reason I ask ... noodling things here ... is that (without auto ISO) in aperture mode and a fixed iso, the only adjustment available is shutter speed. So, amount of light coming in is evaluated and SS adjusted accordingly. Works like a champ, even if there is NO DATA about what the actual aperture is.
Insert AUTO ISO in aperture mode, and it may be that it is looking for / expecting an aperture value (guessing here) because you are in aperture mode. To which, it would seem like the principle approach would be to just use manual mode, as it performs as expected, for floating the ISO.
I'll have to double check with my SL2-S to see if I'm floating ISO okay in Aperture mode (or similar to your scenario). I've not had my SL in use for a bit, recently, so I'm a bit foggy.
But, that's the only thing that comes to mind (again, noodling / guessing / hypothesizing), atm.
I'll take a look tonight / tomorrow when I get a chance.
I tried to reproduce your issue but failed, for me Auto ISO is working fine in both M and A mode. I tried to play around with some ISO related settings but the camera still behaved as expected. I am not sure if it's relevant here but I have the Leica L to M adapter.
I ran into the same thing. The Auto ISO setting has to have a set minimum shutter speed, rather than auto, as it doesn't get the focal length without a 6-bit adapter. (& 6 bit lens) Drove me nuts until I figured it out.

OK, that sounds like it should work. Perhaps then it's also worth getting the Leica M to L adapter! A little crazy that it's implemented that way. I've used uncoded lenses on uncoded adapters on other cameras and auto ISO works fine. I get home tomorrow and will try this out.

Yes, it's goofy! Little oddities like this can make the SL3 frustrating, but there's no denying the output.
