When using a Canon EF lens with image stabilization on, in my case an EF 100-400 ii, with the Canon R5 or R5 ii does the lens image stablization stay activated constantly when the camera is switched on? I have read that this is true. I need to know before I consider upgrading camera bodies.
I currently use a Canon 80D and 6D and the lens image stabilization shuts down when the shutter button is released.
I just now put my EF 400 mm F/4 DO mk II on my R5 m2 with IS on. I then put my ear to the lens. When the LCD is on, I can hear what I think is the IS mechanism going (could be a combination of the R5m2 as well). Once the LCD goes off, the IS mechanism goes off, and the rig is silent. Do something to bring the LCD back on, and I hear that sound again.
I have used both the R5 and R5mk with EF lenses over the years and I have never had a problem running the battery down because the IS going all the time, if that is your concern. However, I have heard such claims before as well. I supposed it could be settings dependent.
That's a feature of R series cameras and not a defect. When I upgraded from the 80D and 6D MK II to the R7 and R5 MK II, the constant IS bothered me at first, but I got used to it. Plus, I no longer needed to wait for IS to stabilize for grab shots. I suppose battery life is impacted, but I rarely need to use my spare batteries for stills (sometimes for video shoots). You can always put the camera in sleep mode or switch it off.
The one thing that drove me nuts was the default continuous or preview (?) AF. Unless you grew up with smartphones, you'll want to disable that feature in the menu.
Sadly yes. Apparently this began with EOS M and is design intent. I was concerned the IS system being engaged while the lens and camera was hanging over my shoulder would damage it.
I since mapped a button to sleep and press it before I bring the camera down from my eye and sling it over my shoulder. On the R5 I used the button between the lens mount and grip on the front.
I just tried my old 100-400 v1. The IS turns off in about 5-10s if you have continuous AF disabled. If you have continuous focus enabled, a/f and IS rarely turns off. This solved my chattering lens on idle.
There menu item in R5 AF - AF1 - Continuous AF. Click to disable and it will not constantly seek. It will only focus/IS when you 1/2 press I think.
The menu item in R5II is called Preview AF on AF1 in R5II. Turn it off there too. To avoid always focussing which causes constant IS.
I think the only reason to enable continuus focus is for video.
