p.1 #1 · Copy Portra 160 645 Negatives Hasselblad vs Sony

My wife, some friends and my Bronica RF645/45mm lens went to the Grapevine Wine Tasting Event in August. My goal was to remove the lens cap before shooting. I’m going to supply two links to unedited files from a roll of Portra 160 shot at ISO 100. First, copies with a Sony A7CR and a Tamron 90mm Macro using 16 shot pixelshift and combined using PixelShift2DNG and then reduced to 60MP. Second, the X2D/HC120mm Macro II f/4 files used 4 shot pixelshift and exported as a DNG file. Everything was converted using Negative Lab Pro in Lightroom Classic. Here are links to the two copy sets for comparison. These are unedited copies. Correction.. the Sony images were sharpened in PS. I guess that makes this comparison a bit less useful.

alright, first impression is you did in fact remove the lens cap before shooting. I'm relieved.

#14 and #6 out of the Sony have weird color shifts that the Hasselblad does not have. I'm surprised by the color variation between the two

In general, I find the X2D images to have better colors and nicer tonal transitions. Also, there might be a slight advantage in resolution. I’m intending to use the X2D for all my copying at this point, so I’ve taken down the Sony. Unfortunately, I placed the Sony through a PS sharpening routine that sharpens areas of contrast transition and can change contrast, micro-contrast and saturation, so the comparison isn’t the best, but behind that was that I felt like I had to do something with the images produced, whereas nothing was done with the Hasselblad images. Also, I downsized the Sony images to 60MP and that may have had some impact, but why two stand out when all were processed the same, I do not know, but I do know that I prefer the images from the X2D. I copied to a 600MB fff file, which Lightroom didn’t like, so I exported 16bit Tiffs, but NLP would not properly convert, so I ended up having Phocus Desktop export the files as DNG and that made everyone happy, except for the storage media. These are very large files. Of course, I can delete the DNG and just keep the HDR JPG images. I think this will be my long term storage, short of keeping a really good image as DNG, but those are few.

I’m about to go on a road trip, where I was going to take my Mamiya 7ii/65mm & 150mm lenses, but the quality of the 645 files has me thinking that a smaller 645 camera might be sufficient and easier to carry.

I would be very hesitant to attribute color shifts of that magnitude to one camera or another. I would look in the software or the processing workflow to figure that out. In any case, considering that your workflow is super simple with the Hasselblad, I wouldn't bother setting up the Sony again. I wouldn't bother looking for the culprit with the color shifts either.

I agree, but forgetting copy work, I think that skin tones are less work with the X2D/Phocus vs A7CR/LRC.
