A Chicago local that I photographed during a recent trip to the area. Some might find the smoking to be gauche, but these are more about his personality and how he wanted to portray himself.

And a completely out of place traditional portrait, because why not?
Excellent. Your connection to him is apparent. The smoking is a plus. It’s part of him and that’s more important than people not liking smoking in general.
You are a master at this Daniel! One has to be a very resilient person to have his body decorated this way.
The big cities seem to attract these types. Such a great venue for a photo op brother!
Masterful ye be!

Great job.
Thank you. I feel the same way about smoking in portraits. Despite not smoking myself, I get a lot of grief from others (mostly photographers) who take issue with photos of people smoking.

Thank you so much Dan!
Big cities definitely seem to attract that type for sure. Probably why I live so close to one, enjoy visiting them, and tend to put folks who have this sort of aesthetic in my lens frequently. I have many tattoos myself (26- I counted last night for the first time in many years), nowhere near what this guy has, but I hope to catch up one day.

For me that is what photography should be! A connection between photographer and subject.

Great shots! If you shot him without the smokes, you wouldn’t be capturing the real person. It’s not like anyone’s lungs are harmed by looking at a photo. Nice work.
