p.1 #1 · Sony a7rV $900 off at B&H

B&H currently has a sale for $900 off on the a7rV in case anyone is looking for one. The a7rIV is $700 off too.

I have seen rumors that an a7IV update should be coming soon. Could this mean an a7rV update is in the works, too?

Nice.

$100 cheaper than the A7CR

I assume the A7RVI will come 6 months to a year after the A7V, but who knows? I am thinking it could mean the A7V gets more MP and ends up closer to the A7RV (think 45ish); whereas the A7RVI jumps to around 70 a year later.

I doubt it. Sony historically has used the same sensor for two generations. So I expect the A7V will remain at 33 Megapixels, while I could see the A7RVI getting a new sensor (possibly up the mpix)

I am curious to see how Sony approaches the sensors for the A7V and a7rVI. We currently have 2 models, but I feel like we could really use 3.

Something entry level FF around 24mp
Something around 45mp with a fast readout time
Something high res 60mp +

I know the S line was originally for low light and video and had a low mp count, but maybe it's time to bring it back and do something like this:
a7V 33mp
a7sIV 45mp (8k video and fast read out, maybe stacked or partially stacked for around 4k?)
a7rVI 70+mp

There is the partially stacked 24mp FF sensor that Panasonic and Nikon have used, but I can't see Sony going from 33mp to 24mp for the a7 line. 24mp would be a nice bump for the S line if it stays video focused, but I can't see the a7s line being priced lower than the a7 line, and we would still have a pretty big gap between 33mp and 60+ mp for most users.

Something entry level FF around 24mp —> A7IV / V ~33 mpix

Something high res 60mp + —> A7RV ~61 mpix

…so what am I missing

The introduction of an A7Rvi will likely be my cue to finally move to a Sony system.

Just holiday pricing, after inflating prices for several months. The current prices (with discount) are where the camera had been at the beginning of year. Tariffs don't add that much to the retail prices of camera.

The 3k price gap between a 4k and 7k camera.

Currently, Sony has nothing that really competes with a similar feature set and price point to the Z8, R5 II, or even the s1r ii. Maybe Sony will stick to 61mp with the a7rVI but speed up the read out time, which would help close the gap.

My experience outside of gear forms has been that a lot of people are price sensitive. I know Nikon users really hopping for a z7III because they want more then 24mp but don't want to spend Z8 money on a camera.

Expect, resolution, dynamic range, AF, lens selection. Those are superior in Sony RV, also I don't expect RVI as Z8, R5 competition.
I'm stil missing A7CR, A7CII competition from other brands, there aren't compact ILCE cameras with EVF.

Agreed, which is why I mentioned maybe Sony should update the a7s line for 8k video and faster sensor readout speed, which is also more important for video than it is for photos, and leave the R line for max IQ photography.

Agreed. I just wish Sony gave a full shutter for the a7c / a7cr lines. That's the biggest reason I have not picked one up. I want to be able to put a fast prime on it, such as my Voigtlander 40mm f1.2, and not have to worry about my max shutter speed. I have also been wishing for a ZF with a higher res sensor too, but Nikon has so far left us hanging there, too. I wonder which manufacturer will be first to put a stacked sensor in a compact body. That might be the ultimate compact.
