p.1 #1 · the EOS R for outdoor event photography total worked!

i volunteer at several faith based organizations.

i photograph their events which take place indoors and outdoors.

yesterday, there was a 5k/10k run/walk.

i used the EOS R and the RF 35/1.8.

i also brought the EF 24-70 w/RF adapter.

the EOS R for event photography total worked!

kept the shutter at 1/250.

rode the aperture between f2.8 and f8.

auto iso on a sunny, occasionally cloudy morning.

the EOS R + RF 35/1.8 was super light.

i could dash between several camera position during the race (prep, start, hills, road, finish line).

i know folks discount the EOS R due to it's goofy slide bar.

but with the same/similar sensor as the 5D mkiv, i remain very pleased with the EOS R.

heck, it's a seven year old camera and i'm still impressed.

ymmv.

thumbs up.

Yeah, at 7 years old, it's still a very capable camera. I know a few people who still use a 5D2 & 5D3 for professional work. Why? Because it get's the job done. You don't always need the latest & greatest. You proved that

My EOS R still feels great in my hands and is more than usable for most situations. I used 13-year-old technology (5D Classic) before I bought my EOS R, and it created some lovely images.

i am thinking of taking the EOS R to Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia for a month long trip.

i believe the EOS R (even with it's goofy slide bar/controls) remains a very capable image making tool.

is the AF/dynamic range top flight?

no, but it is better than the 5DIV and that was the top flight/go-to for years.

SD card, good and available batteries, small-ish (not as small as my Fuji X-T1 or X-T2 but smaller than my 6D or 5DIII)

i'm thinking a small kit: EOS R, RF35/1.8, EF17-40/4, RF85/1.8.

cheapish, inexpensive gear that is easily replaceable while definitely being good enough.

i might cross-post this comment to the Canon board and ask for comments from those who have been to SE Asia.

thumbs up.

I love the R's touch bar for changing AF patterns. Wish my other cameras had it. So much faster than using a wheel or button. My only complaint is the cropped 4K video on the R. Why? Otherwise it's great for travel and wandering around town. And, yeah, it feels better on the hand than my R6 MK II. You can feel the cool magnesium beneath the skin.

It’s definitely a good camera - and cheap.
Not for video though - it has wild rolling shutter at the slightest provocation.
For stills though - it’s great IMO.

The R fits right in there between the 5D4 and the R5.
I dislike that the 5D4 didn't have a flippy screen for landscape or tripod macro photography. I almost went 6D2 before the R. And EF glass is great on the R.
I just wish they would have put focus bracketing in a firmware upgrade.
