Unfortunately, the entire historic part of the town was destroyed. The Wells Fargo Stage and Bank building is still standing as most of it was brick and steel. The post office was similar construction but obviously not as good, and part of the walls fell. Really sad. If you know the town at all, the old Catholic Church, a white, wooden structure that was probably mid to late 1800's was totally destroyed.

This is TRAGIC!
The result of unpopular growth sentiments? politics?, land management?" Calif "red tape" to rebuild
It is TRAGIC!
"Mother Nature or pure evil" caused this. We don't need wars to devastate property or kill people.

Fine images Jack. Unless I am devoid of tv news reels on the "boob tube", and that is VERY possible,, here in Mary-land we never saw this on the news...

My mother's youngest sister(RIP) and her family live(d) in Newport Beach......

Thanks Dan. This particular fire was actually started by a "dry" lightening storm at about the worst possible time of year for the area. Something like 21 separate fires were started by said storm over a period of just a few hours. This particular one dubbed the 6-5 fire had the double negative of being fed by 30-40 mph winds. Temps were in the high 90's and the air in the Sierra foothills is very dry even during the wettest periods of the year. It was a worst-case scenario weather event for the old town.

As for rebuilding, California has been broke, running deep into the red for the past 20 years or so due to gross mismanagement. So I doubt there will be any funds reserved to even maintain what is left standing unless they come from local donations, which will probably work -- I know I'll donate and suspect most local to the area will as well.

Thanks for the story Jack. Yes a very sad state of affairs it be for the "Cali" residents and tax payers.
I know Americans are upset by all the fires in California. Just because we are not residents of your state doesn't mean we dont care about what is happening to a beautiful state.
