Magification vs Depth ofField

p.1 #1 · Magification vs Depth ofField

I have a depth of field question.
If I am shooting the same macro subject with two different lenses with a 100mp MF camera. One lens is 1:1 (Canon EF 180mm) and the other 1:2 (GF 120mm).
I assume the dof with the 120mm will be greater than the 100mm. The magnification with the 120mm is half of that produced with the 180mm so I would then need to crop the photo to achieve the same image that the 180mm produced. I am assumming that the end product of the 120mm would be a broadly focused picture albeit with less megapixels. So am I correct in assuming that getting macro results by shooting from a further distance and cropping could yield a “macro” result without focus stacking?

DOF is based on the Circle of Confusion, so enlarging would make the COC larger. Not sure cropping a less magnified image would result in more DOF.

Cropping gives the same result as a TC, within sensor limitations.

Both give increased DOF because there is a larger proportion from the more telecentric part of the lens.
