p.2 #1 · Voigtlander 28mm 1.5 Noct vs 35mm 2.0 APO Z-mount on Nikon ZF | |
To be honest, I doubt that we will ever see a chipped version of the Thypoch Simera 28/1.4.
I'm not even that bothered by the lack of focus confirmation (green frame around the focus box), as manual focus subject detection, including zooming in, works identically with non-CPU lenses.
Nor does the lack of information in the EXIF/working aperture bother me.
What really bothers me is the loss of the RSF/RSF Hold function with dumb lenses.
This makes a lot of things much more cumbersome with a Z8.
Unlike my Z6, you can't assign spot metering to one of the buttons, it only works via RSF/RSF Hold, and you don't have an instant subject detection kill switch and no other RSF/RSF Hold configuration either
Otherwise, I would have bought the 28/1.4 Thypoch long ago, as I only want the focal length/max. aperture combination for environmental portraits, where it really shines.
But I'm still close to taking the plunge here, as there is currently hardly any alternative.
Even if Cosina/Zeiss were to release an Otus ML 28mm f/1.4 soon, it would easily cost five times as much.
It wouldn't be much different if Nikon were to release a Z 28/1.4 S or even a Z 28/1.2 S.
Sinfully expensive, large, heavy, bulky, predestined for studio use and the like, or if you have an assistant to carry the equipment.
In terms of rendering, the AF-S NIKKOR 28 mm 1:1.4 E ED would be almost perfect, but also far too expensive, whether new or used.
Apart from that, the lens is too bulky, too long, and too heavy with FTZ.
The strengths of the Nokton 28/1.5, which is essentially very versatile, are more of a weakness for my profile.
For landscapes, architecture, and panoramas, I definitely prefer the Apo Lanthar line, and for a 28mm f/1.4, I'm looking for a specialist for environmental portraits, and in my opinion, the Thypoch simply fulfills this requirement better.
But I've also become very sensitive to bokeh fringing, which is no surprise with lenses like the Apo Lanthar's, Plena, and others.
That aside, my eyes are sufficiently contaminated with CA and LoCA from my days using very fast Canon FD lenses, like the FD 20-35/3.5 L, FD 85/1.2 L, FD 135/2.8, FD 200/2.8...
So my eyes can now only tolerate minimal additional doses here.
