p.1 #1 · Adjusting Focus on an M Lens

Has anyone tried to adjust focus on an M lens themselves? I’m wondering how involved it is.

I tripped and fell the other day. Thankfully the camera didn’t hit the ground but the jolt seems to have thrown the focus off slightly- it now front focuses. It’s not the rangefinder, as my other lenses are all still sharp. The image of the lens in question is also still sharp - just not in the right place.

I've only done a "simple" helicoid clean and grease on a Canon 50mm f/1.4 LTM. Took hours, and it was not an easy task to put it back together. Lots of sweating and swearing. Calibrating the lens properly would be harder. Don't recommend it.

Take it to a qualified technician. The chances of making things worse are pretty high.

There are videos online on how to adjust m mount lenses. In fact many Chinese M mount lenses expect you to do it to get the range finder parts on the lens side calibrated. That makes it harder if you don't have a digital M with live view. If you only have a film M body I would send it out to be done...

Thank you, that was my fear.

CLAs are simply part of ownership of finely crafted mechanical tools/toys. Cars, watches, cameras (lenses) occasionally need adjustment, cleaning, lubricating or (after falling/dropping) repair. Just consider it part of your ongoing maintenance for the health of your camera system. There are several places you can take/send your lens.
