p.1 #1 · Problems Enrolling in Windows 10 ESU

Hopefully someone can help me out, as Microsoft support seems nonexistent. My Windows 10 laptop had a link to "enroll" in Extended Security Updates (ESU). I followed the prompts, then it asked to sign in (I have a local acct on this laptop) or an email. I used an email address that I'd previously used on a different laptop to create an MS acct on that one so I could download & install MS Office 2016 on that one. I think that's where the problem started.

It then went to a screen stating: "Use another account to enroll in extended security updates" and I'm forced to close & cannot enroll in the W10 ESU. What happened & how do I fix it? I use PS CS6 on this laptop, so I don't want to upgrade to Windows 11. Do I have to create another administrator acct on this laptop? How would this affect other programs linked to my original acct? I read that for one home payment, one payment will cover ESUs for up to 10 home devices. It's all confusing with no clear answers. If anyone knows of an MS FAQ or troubleshooting website that addresses this or can help, I'd appreciate it.

TIA, Wing.

I have not done it, but perhaps you need an online MS account for that W10 laptop. They don't want you to use local accounts anymore. You don't need to use the same account used by any other devices.

I have installed Win 11 on my old laptop. Flyby11 is the tool to use. There are others such as Rufus. The only downside is I had one driver not install after Win 11... you just go to Settings... I can't remember the full path but security, device.. and then uncheck the three boxes, one is for drivers.

Clone your drive before you start so just in case, you can reinstall your old environment. The folks I know who did the transition never needed the clone... it just works.

I don't think the OP wants W10.

I didn't want Win 11 on my old machine either... but the pending loss of support kind of pushed me to 11. I was thinking about just giving in and buying a new laptop... but this laptop runs a small set of applications that do not require high performance... for my music/keyboard rig.. diagnostics for my cars... and while all running on 10, I suspect it was just a matter of time that I would have an issue... moving to 11 was undramatic, worked, gave me new life, and saved me a grand or so.

There is anxiety out there moving these old machines to 11... I had it. TIP: clone the drive before the move... if problems, clone back and nothing lost.

MS has not supported me once, ever. For me the main issue is that less and less software will be compatible with W10 over time as developers won't want to expend the resources.
Pretty much all intel CPUs introduced after Q3 2021 are asymmetrical and really need W11 thread director for best performance. AMD desktop CPUs through 2024 still are symmetrical although laptops are not.
The ESU is mostly for people who don't want the extra intrusiveness of W11 or have a pre-8th generation intel or similar CPU. There are so many thousands of Skylake 6th gen and Kaby Lake 7th gen desktops in particular that have plenty of CPU performace to be useful today.

Update... on another older machine running Windows 10, not qualified for 11... I got a message to enroll in ESU for one year... my research said it would cost me $30. So I clicked on it, and here MS determined I get the program for free... boink! I guess I am enrolled. No thrills, just worked.

Just an update: I was able to enroll one of my W10 laptops to W10 ESU,but it was not easy or intuitive & I couldn't find a guide to help. I think my issue was trying to use a 9 y/o MS acct on another PC. I finally had to create another user acct on this PC & then another MS acct & had to log in, restart the PC & stay logged in before I was allowed to enroll in W10 ESU. Unlike the YouTube videos I saw, there weren't 3 options (use One Drive & allow MS access; use MS Reward points; or buy it for $30 for a year). I only had one option, to use One Drive, which was "free" in cost, but MS is on my PC. I'd have preferred to buy it with a nondescript VISA gift card. Anyway, MS had me create a bunch of crap PWs & a PIN. I prefer a local acct, so logged off this new MS acct on my PC. when I logged into my local acct, it did not show that I was enrolled in W10 ESU, so I guess I have to be logged in when I now do monthly updates. What a crap fest! Now I have to do this on 2 other PCs...or junk them. If this is what Microsoft is pushing us towards, I think I'm done buying PCs & will just use my Macs going forward.

I guess it was easy for me as I use MS accounts on all my machines, not local accounts, and share and store data using OneDrive. I am not so sure why so many fight The Google or MS... their stuff generally works well for me. I guess I am one of the few who really don't care if they know I search for urinary issues or rentals in Malta.

All the latest moves by Windows combined with years of problems with updates finally forced me to Apple. Should have did this a long time ago. Both my current windows desktop and laptop met my limited needs but with Window's dropping support they forced my hand.

It doesn't matter if you used the email for another computer. Use email again, and then check your email for a msg from MS. Every time mine was in the spam box, and not the in box. The email will contain "Your single-use code" - a six digit number for you to key in. You do not need to log into MS to enroll for the extended security updates. It will enroll your machine/compiuter not you. You then will get one year of security updates. Hope that helps

p.1 #13 · Problems Enrolling in Windows 10 ESU

Hi James, thanks for chiming in. When I tried to log into an old MS acct (from laptop A) into my laptop B, I was sent a security code via email by MS. It then affixed laptop B to that old MS acct, but wouldn't let me enroll in W10 ESU. The only way I could get around this was to create a new user account & MS acct on laptop B, but it tried to create another local acct & wouldn't link to my original user acct on laptop B. That's why I'd have to log out of my usual local acct (which I can't enroll in W10 ESU) & log back in on this new user & MS acct to be able to receive future updates. On laptop A with the original MS acct, it still won't let me enroll in W10 ESU. I haven't tried to create another user & MS acct like in laptop B because I don't want the same issue. On my laptop C, there isn't even a link to enroll in W10 ESU. I don't know if it's because this was originally a Windows 7 machine I updated to W10 or not. That's the gist of my problems.

Thanks, Wing.

Windows 10 is out of support as of 5 days ago.

It's time to move on. To Apple, actually

Thanks Scott, I do have 2 Macs & have never had any problems like this on them, although they're getting long in the tool. I don't need the latest & greatest at this moment, just continued support without creating more e-waste. I don't think there will be any more PCs in my future given where Microsoft is going.

Hi EBH, I don't recall specifically as it's been a while, but I think you do create an Apple account. I've never used it nor did I activate iCloud. Someone who's more recently bought a Mac could give you a better answer.

Most every OS and application made today is dependent on paying as you go and/or frequent online authentication. A perpetual license hardly means anything if the company shuts down the license servers that need to be accessed every month.
Today everyone was going nuts in the US-East-1 Region because the Amazon was down for hours. Even some apps on the smartphone were not working everywhere if that region was involved.

It's as if only Linux remains that will allow for unfettered, truly unconnected operation. There are a decent number of applications, but not the best for RAW files. The more I have delved into Apple, the less that appeals to me either.

I've decided to keep using W10 as is for about a year on several performance machines (built 2023-2025) and decide after that where to go. I'm far less concerned about vulnerabilites than eventual lack of software compatibility, but I have no need to keep production machines constantly online so it's not good advice for normal people.

For me, the Windows 11 "straw" that broke the Camel's back was having the Desktop being automatically included in OneDrive. I'm not interested in talking to my computer to find out where my files are actually located.

I'm not an Adobe poweruser, so I switched to Linux Mint 22.2. With one exception, the whole experience so far has been positive - and it seems like I'm not the only one. If you can believe YouTube, there seems to be a lot of users P.O. with Windows 11. There are even new RAW processors geared to Linux users, like RapidRaw.

It has worked so well that I purchased what I believe is the only Linux commercial photo app - Corel Aftershot Pro 3. With a few quirks, it too works great, except (the one exception) it looks like it's not being further developed. For example, Canon support is only up to the EOS R5 and R6, none newer. IMHO, Corel is making a mistake given the current environment. Actually, any Mac applications (which are Unix based) are also missing this opportunity.

However, what I'd really like to see ported to Linux is Zoner, a grossly underrated Swiss Army knife app for non-professionals.
