p.1 #1 · Look at what the wind blue in, American Avocets
When I arrived at the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside, NY a friend informed me that there was a pair of American Avocet in one of the ponds. I was rather surprised and suggested that they must have been blown in by Hurricane Imelda which was off the East Coast and piling water onto the south shore causing unusually high tides. It was a few hours before high tide and the paths in the park were about to be submerged. When I found the Avocets they were swimming among a group of Yellow Legs and Snowy Egrets. They looked exhausted as there eyes kept closing. When they could they would find a place to sleep yet they were uneasy in the strange place and kept waking. They must have had a tough time at about one ounce and being blown by strong winds to a place they have never been. Here are some of the photos I took at 700mm on my APS-C body and all are cropped from about 1/4 frame in tough conditions as there was quite a bit of heat shimmy.
Comments and suggestions welcome,
Morris

Lovely work on those whites as per your usual Morris Such a stunning bird hope to find them in my viewfinder some day. The curvature on their bill is really wicked!

Great story behind these images, and outstanding set Morris. Any one of these should be printed, but I'm partial to #3.
Thank you Louie

Very nice set and a touching story, I suspect they will be migrating South soon, hopefully they make it.

speaking of Long Island, your local Facebook photographers from there have been posting Avocets as of July.
That's interesting. I don't follow that group though some of them follow my Facebook.
