Battery life is a real bummer in places like northern mn for owls in winter. I had to rig up taping hand warmers to battery grip to make the battery last enough for shooting.
I found even covering youth hockey tournaments that the moderately cold rink-side conditions significantly zapped battery life with the R5II I'm using (I kind of think it's down to copy variation because apparently some do not have this problem). My solution has been to use a high capacity USB power bank to run the camera. It's a slight annoyance to have a cord sticking out the side, but the upside is that I haven't been burning through batteries faster than a couple chargers can keep me supplied with fresh ones. I also use a MagSafe-like USB connector to allow the cable to easily disconnect from the camera should it snag on something, to keep stress off the camera's USB port. While I haven't tried it, it might also be a viable cold weather wildlife solution.

Are you running the updated firmware? That did make a meaningful difference for me, but its still way worse than R5.

Did you see any other benefits of running 1.1.1 or just battery life in the cold?
The AF is more accurate and stickier it seems to me. Upgraded one and not the other and took them both out. when i got home I updated the other one too.
In Africa if I want the GPS coordinates in post later, I have to take a pic with my phone and then transfer the coordinates.
Good work around. Another is create a GPS track log and use downloader pro to match it with the photos and insert the coordinates. If they can put it into your phone and we had it in the 5D why not R5/ it probably costs them less than $10 to build it into the R5.
The GP-E2 still works on the R5 II. I often use 3 bodies on Safari in Africa so I can use that info for any of them.
They should bring back the internal GPS anyway.
