I ordered one of these an hour after preorders went live at B&H. I've got a long trip planed for next month and wanted to try this new Sigma over my Tamron 28-200. B&H says back ordered now on my order status. Did any of these ship or is this a delay?
I know someone on another site who got his through a local camera store on Friday. But, Sigma only shipped one to the dealer. Pays to be a good customer, I guess.
Maybe they are getting more orders than expected and the initial run is in short supply.
B&H tends to be tight-lipped about equipment availability; however, I have found that Adorama sometimes publishes some meaningful availability data (that often also applies to B&H). A couple days ago, they showed an expected shipping date of 9/29. Today, their site now just says October, 2025.
I pre-ordered a week after they opened the pre-orders, so I am obviously way down in the queque. Given that Sigma has already formally announced that orders far exceed supply, I assume that I will be lucky to get the lens before December. Hopefully, you will do a lot better, but you may miss the window you are looking for. Let us know how it goes.
I pre-ordered from B&H a week after pre-orders opened up (I waited to see the reviews). I just received notification that my order is now "Processing" - just in time for a trip (I'll pair with my GM 16-35mm f2.8 II and Viltrox 50mm f2 Air, which will, hopefully, become my regular travel kit). Hurray! Edit: Shipped and will receive tomorrow.
My order from B&H is now “processing”. We’ll see how it compares against my Tamron 28-200. I’m also using a Tamron 35-150 a lot, and love that lens. Less weight/bulk with more range would sometimes be a blessing though. Fingers crossed!

I’m surprised there’s not more info and reviews about this lens out there given how popular the 28-200 is.
The way I look at it, the pre-production samples were sent to mostly Sony "shills", so they likely will not be completely objective, knowing that a bad review has the potential of cutting them off from future product releases. To be fair, there are those like Gerald Undone that do seem to be a bit more objective than average. Now that the lens is shipping, the real reviews will come from those that actually paid for the lens out of their own pocket.
Judging from the published MTF graphs, I expect that I will be happy with this lens in situations where I can accommodate slow lens speed. I expect this will be one of my travel lenses and will use other lenses for local work.
