I recently acquired a Sony 16-35 PZ zoom for my A7CR. When using the new lens the camera seems to jump into auto magnify without being asked -- quite at random. I have the camera set to AF-S or AF-C, and the lens switched to AF, but it still happens. Needless to say, I have been careful not to touch the focus ring on the lens in any case.
I'm not sure if it is a problem with the lens -- faulty contact perhaps -- or a Sony setting I have accidentally turned on. This morning, for example, I found an entry for "full time DMF" was ON and turned it OFF. I thought DMF was a focus choice when setting AF-S, AF-C etc. So I was surprised to discover there was another setting elsewhere. Can anyone explain why both are needed? Or any other suggestions as to what might be happening?
I am travelling at the moment with just the one lens. When I get back I will try some of my other lenses to see if that makes a difference.
I don't have experience with that lens or camera in particular but on my A1, when using DMF (which I leave turned on via the menu) or switching the lens itself to manual focus, just touching the focus ring will trigger magnification (assuming I have auto-magnification turned on via the menu) regardless of what focus mode the camera's set to, which in my case is AF-C pretty much all the time. I find it quite useful for specific situations, especially with focus peaking enabled, where AF is not seeing the subject properly or precisely enough for whatever reason.
Not 100% sure, but I believe I have experienced what you are describing. I had a lens set to MF and was accidentally bumping the focus ring while shooting. The camera was then automatically jumping to magnified view on the LCD screen. I tweaked some setting to prevent the auto magnification, but unfortunately its been so long that I don't recall the setting name.
Thanks all. Looks like the culprit was the 'Full Time DMF' setting. Since turning it off, the problem has disappeared.
I had not realised that option existed as well as choosing DMF from the Focus Mode list. That, combined with a very sensitive focusing ring that triggers magnification if you so much as look at it.
