In the 35mm area I use the CV 35 APO (no complaints except maybe I’d enjoy faster occasionally. Otherwise I love it.
40/2 for AF.
I’m curious if there’s an obvious 35 or 40mm native Z mount lens with AF for those that can’t afford the 1.2 and want more compact anyway
I know there’s the 1.8 and 1.4. . Are those my best 2 bets for stepping it up from the 40/2?
Your shots with the apo are tough to beat, but I realize you're wanting AF. For portraits?
I'm still looking for the perfect 35mm AF lens myself. Right now I adapt the Tamron 35mm 1.4 for portraits (not ideal with weight on the ftz, but not terrible either). IQ wise I'm really happy. AF isn't the snappiest but easily good enough for most portraits. Cheap option for the images you get (much nicer bokeh than the CV apo). That said, for sports purposes I wouldn't mind something snappier.
I haven't found a better option and it's one of the cheapest options when buying used. So I haven't moved on. I also love the 28mm f1.4E and prefer the 28mm focal length.

I've been super curious about this lens after seeing more shots from it since this thread started. The metal build and aperture ring are far more enticing than the plain jane Nikon Z 1.4 to me, but it does sound like AF is behind the Z quite a bit.
2:21 for AF examples, that reminds of the slowest GFX lenses
Petapixel also made a video on the Sirui 35mm f1.4: ?si=KB61lALyoFbC9Ard
It looks nice but I'll wait for the Viltrox Pro, which will be significantly bigger but faster AF with VCM instead of STM.
Portraits will be part of it but I want a 2 or 3 prime set for local concerts and certain events too.
The hurry is all about a concert and a comedy show coming up.
Tamron 35-150 and a wide prime would be cool as an alternative but I don’t have the cash and I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews.

Depending on who you ask some would suggest to buy the primes cry once and never again
Check the Nikon z preview forum pretty sure that’s the consensus
If get zoom highly recommend you to cobsider a use z 24-70 f2.8 mark i newyork wrote:
After talking to a member whose opinion I respect a lot, I’m thinking the trinity is a wise choice. Fast primes and fun lenses can come later.
The Nikon trinity is far off so I’m thinking the Nikon badged tamron 17-28/28-75/70-180 or 17-28 and 35-150 combo.

I don’t think you can go wrong with that idea. And there can be some bargains in barely used condition on our b&s board. I have developed great respect for Tamron over the years, my 28-75/2.8 G2, 50-300, and 50-400 copies are truly excellent performers (E mount, but that may change). I have long lusted after the 35-150/2-2.8, it’s highly capable. I owned the 2.8-4 version for my D850 and it did not disappoint.
I use the 35mm GM with the Megadap when I want to use a "light" setup.
But otherwise nothing come close to the Nikon 35mm f1.2S for the rendering. Even my 35mm APO Summicron SL, while much sharper, doesn't impress me as much as the 35mm f1.2S. Colors, local contrast and rendering are unmatched for a 35mm AF lens in my opinion.
A Tamron 35mm 1.4 is one of my last remaining F mount lenses. I thought about moving it along, but wan't willing to let it go for peanuts. All I have to do is take some photos with it and it stays. It is an amazing lens. I have used it to good effect on a Z6II, Z50 and a Z7. It IS a heavy beast. It doesn't seem to care what you shoot it at. The colors it gives keep me coming back.

For the price it’s worth every penny and not worth selling for what you’ll get. I made the mistake of moving on from the 28 1.4e several years ago and bought the Tamron as its quasi replacement.
Too bad their timing was so poor for releasing this lens as it never got the credit it deserved.
