p.1 #1 · Zf unexpected results when metering with manual lens...

Using a 7Artisans 35mm f/1.4 lens, Highlight-weighted Metering does not work. It can be chosen in the menu system, but the camera reverts back to Center-Weighted when returning to shooting mode. Works fine with an AF lens. I've scoured the internet, the Nikon site and here on FM. No luck finding an explanation or solution. No luck deep-diving the menu system either. Ideas?

I've only seen that behavior with dumb/unchipped lenses. Doesn't matter if they are native Z or adapted F, that's how it works, something about that is incompatible with highlight metering.

I just use the EC wheel to -0.7 with matrix metering to good results instead.

Curious. I wonder what the Zf needs/uses from a chipped lens to effect highlight-weighted metering.

I took two successive photos, one with, the other without highlight-weighted metering, examined the image data via in-camera menus, and the only difference I could see was exposure time. Not even the Thom Hogan book about the Zf offers a clue.

Oh well, it is what it is…

I'm using the same lens on my ZF and I have also observed Goofy metering.... For what it's worth, the metering seems far more accurate if the lens is not wide open. But at 1.4 it is pretty erratic.
