Sony has once again increased the prices of many of its imaging products in the US. This follows an increase in US prices across most of its lineup in May and July due to tariffs.

The recent price increase for US customers isn't across the board, but it does impact many of the company's cameras, as Sony rumors initially spotted. The a7CR, which was a great deal at launch, is now $3400 at Sony's website. That's up $400 from its launch price and $200 from the price increase earlier this year. The a9 III also got substantially more expensive, with a $400 increase from July, now coming in at $6800.

It's not just high-end models that are more expensive, either. The Sony ZV-E10 II is now $1200, or $200 pricier than the launch price. The Sony ZV-1 II didn't see as substantial an increase, but it now costs $1050.

Lenses weren't left out of the latest round of pricing adjustments, either.
Lenses weren't left out of the latest round of pricing adjustments, either. The Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II is now $350 more expensive than in July, coming in at $2650. The Sony FE 50mm F1.2 GM was also impacted with a new price of $2300, up $300 from July. Not all lenses saw increases this time around, though. The Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is still priced the same as it was in July (though it was part of the first increase), as is the 70-200 mm F2.8 GM OSS and many of the company's more budget-focused lenses.

The latest adjustment aligns with the 19% tariff rate that took effect on August 7th on imports from Thailand, where Sony makes many of its US-bound cameras.

When Sony adjusted the rates in July, the tariffs were set at a temporary 10% rate, so it seems to be adjusting now that the higher rates have gone into effect. Sony isn't the only company raising US prices in light of the updated rate. Both Nikon and Fujifilm have already done so a second time, and Canon said that it's considering another price increase later this year.

You mentioned "The a7CR, which was a great deal at launch, is now $3400 at Sony's website."
In Canada, the a7CR costs $4098 CAD before taxes (13%), and $4631 CAD with the taxes added. Google converted $4631 CAD to $3350 US.
So, the US price has caught up with the price across the border.

I just quoted the source. I edited to include the link that I forgot to put in the original post.

It seems third party lens manufacturers are somehow keeping prices much lower than expected.

Here in Europe, we have long been accustomed to annoyingly high prices (not including our taxes!).
In the US, we can now see that it's not all about tariffs, customs duties, or taxes.
TTArtisan 40/2, made in China: USD 170
Sony 40/2.5G, made in China: USD 800
What is the best explanation for the price difference?

You also need to add taxes to the US bought camera to complete the comparison.

Harder to do since US states all have their own sales tax rates, ranging from 0% in a few states with the highest I think being around 7%. There can also be local taxes on top of that.

Yes, it can be annoying when traveling and not knowing how much things are really going to cost when you get to the register.

I guess it’s good that I don’t *have* to upgrade my gear, though I was hoping to at some point. Sony pretty much pricing-out the typical US consumer. At this rate, I doubt I’ll ever be upgrading to either new or used.

I was under the impression that you don't pay taxes when purchasing from B&H regardless of your home state policies. I guess I was mistaken.

And any price increases resulting from tariffs, will also be subject to the sales tax collected by the state….

Unfortunately, B&H changed their policy 5-6 years ago and are now charging tax (though they have their own credit card that offsets the tax as cash back). That said, there are a few authorized retailers that don't charge tax (ex. Glazer's in WA and B&C Camera in NV). It's a bit of a mess when you're shopping around online and trying to find out what the total is.

Many states require you to self report taxable purchases where sales tax was not collected as part of the transaction, and as part of that self reporting, you'd also pay the sales tax on that amount.

Or put another way taxes on cameras that used to lower in the US than in Canada are now higher in the US. We have the cost of tariffs and sales tax.

I am sure it is not only Sony that has increased their prices. This passion is getting more and more expensive... Come to think of it, not only photography gear, everything, I mean, EVRYTHING, is getting more expensive ☹️.

If you use B&H's "Payboo" credit card, they will cover the sales tax.

https://share.google/OiHmQPAaNVblje2gL

And contrary to some internet myths, this is a regular credit card. No fees and the APR for purchases not paid by due date is in line with other credit cards.

You can combine Payboo with B&H's edu discount too if you can get it. I am in a ~10% sales tax state and have saved a lot of money this way on some edu qualified stuff.

Haven't bought from B&H in a while tho (like 2025 so far at least). Prices are crazy and would rather spend money on other things.

So you're saying it may be time to put a less used lens or camera body on the market to fund yet another unnecessary purchase?

B&C now charges sales tax for NJ. Not sure about other states. Part of this seems to be due to "Shop" platform (different from Shopify) for payments that is being used by these retailers.

Oh you're right! I thought they didn't but they must have changed it (or I was just wrong). Glazer's doesn't for sure though.
