p.3 #1 · R5II to replace R5 and R6II?

FWIW, I just tried the R5II again, using spot AF to ensure it didn't latch onto something peripheral, it had great difficulty focusing on horizontal window blinds, horizontal edges of my monitor, etc. Vertical edges of window frames, monitor, shelving, etc. was no problem at all. This was with the camera in landscape/horizontal orientation.

I found horizontal lines were somewhat less problematic when the camera used the AF point I most often use: normal post with four surround/assist points.

According to Canon: „…. The next generation of the system, Dual Pixel Intelligent AF, debuted in 2024 in the Canon EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II. This delivers numerous enhancements in detection and tracking thanks to the new Accelerated Capture imaging platform. Powered by a new DIGIC Accelerator processor, which works in co-ordination with the DIGIC X image processor and a new high-speed CMOS sensor, Accelerated Capture unlocks the ability to more accurately track subjects by identifying faces and upper bodies, even when they are temporarily obscured from view. Dual Pixel Intelligent AF is also capable of targeting pre-registered faces in a scene, and supports Action Priority AF, which can automatically recognise and focus on specific types of action in football, basketball and volleyball.

In the EOS R1, the Dual Pixel Intelligent AF is advanced still further with Cross Type AF, enabling it to detect phase difference not just vertically, like other AF systems, but also horizontally at the same time. This enhanced sensitivity results in increased focusing accuracy and speed in low-light and low-contrast situations, and even more stable AF performance in continuous shooting mode. …“

Just further pushes me into the , don't buy this stuff new, and don't believe anything Canon says especially the Canon authorized presentation shills.
Always wait about 8-10 years between updates, you won't be feeding a company that is tricking out and promising the moon. Canon is one of the worst.
Let the Canon fanboys take the hit.

I don't understand what you're trying to say. What did Canon promise you that they didn't deliver on?

Then why stay with them? I have seen you do so much complaining about Canon it is crazy you still use them. Big deal you have lenses you like. Switch and be happy. There are so many choices of systems today, go with the one you want and be done being miserable.

Personally the R1 delivered everything they said it would, what a beast of a camera. I never been a fan of the R5 or the R5 II which I still own. However the R1 is just an amazing camera, at least to me. The R1 is actually the first camera that had my wife switch from her DLSR.

If I had as much hate towards a company as it seems you do then I would switch in a heartbeat. Life is to short.

ROFL... what RobAmy said. I've been "with" Canon since 2003. Has Canon occasionally frustrated and/or disappointed me? Sure. So, why? Perhaps, just perhaps, my expectations/needs did not line up with the majority of the market. If so, that is not Canon's problem. If you look at Canon's market share, it is obvious that they are doing a lot of things right. They are delivering exceptionally good cameras and some stunningly good glass.

IMO, only reason they are ahead is they were so far ahead to begin with..
I like the R5m2.. Just telling the truth about it.. Canon is on every street corner.. You can pick them up every where. Never buy new IMO... wasted money.

Rob's is a Canon fan boy, will buy anything with the Canon logo on it.

When was the last time you walked into a Best Buy and looked at cameras? The last time I was there, Sony brand was up front and center and I had to look for the Canon section around the back side. A store associate of course immediately tried enticing me back over to the Sony section. When I asked him why the push for Sony, he told me that Sony gives them free incentives and huge discounts to buy their gear if they push their product and Canon doesn't.
We wont even talk about the internet flooded with Sony influencers.

And just for the record, there is nothing wrong with Sony or any other brand camera gears out there. They are all outstanding in their own way to meet everyone's needs or wants.

So what Sony, Nikon or other brand gear do you have in your bag?
Don't tell me you only own Canon gear. By your logic that would make YOU a Canon Fan boy/girl.

Good points and reminder that brands are constantly vying for advantages to sell their products that are not related to the actual features or performance of those products. Things like what products are placed where on supermarket shelves, as an example. Or why the cheap wine is on the bottom shelves below eye-level.

When I worked in photo retail way before the current age of influencers, people got a lot of their buying info from store staff. And for sure certain brands offered spiffs/incentives to sell their products. Another factor would be whether or not staff are on commission. Things now certainly are a lot more complex with many more ways for brands to 'influence' potential customers. And I think this can be extrapolated way beyond simple consumer matters (what should I buy) to pretty much all other areas of our lives.

As for advice here on the Canon board, I don't think it's any different than over at Nikon, Sony, Leica, etc. You're going to get info from people who use and know the system and certainly will have at least familiarity bias favoring that system. And some will be outright fanboys. You just have to take that info, weigh it against the rest and also against your own experience. The first half of this thread is a pretty good example of various valid opinions to the OP's question. The OP can take those points and, based on their own requirements, determine which is most suitable.

I plan on wearing this R5m2 out. Hopefully it, and my lenses will hold up. After 8 months in South America we will see if it makes the cut. I personally want to know what it will do, and what it will not do.. I pretty much know now what to expect. So, I am good to go.. I learned along time ago not to pay much attention to the fanboys.. And the sales people.

I have been running r5 & mii side by side since launch. Personally I will never go to field with only 1 camera - I have had 2camera failures, and after the last one , I plan to take three bodies in the field for dedicated photo trips. The reason is because if 1 fails, then I am limited to one lens set up only. if canon has a good sale on Mark two for Thanksgiving I’m gonna get a second Mk Ii body.

If you want to go with only one body, r5mii wins in almost every category except battery life in extreme cold yes, you give up some high ISO noise, but you also gain some highlight latitude over the m1, plus pre-capture and improved auto focus or absolutely worth it.
But I would much rather have 2 bodies.

At least the OP knows what the R5II is capable of and it's many short comings..Weigh it against your time with the R5.

Online reviews have confirmed that R1 has a better ability to look past vertical lines due to dual pixel, and R5MII is substantially better than R5 for eye detect servo; I use both side by side and while initially I didn't notice much of a difference, now it is clear that R5II often acquires focus faster / more often than R5 in the field.

I'm quite happy with my R5 kit and see no reason to spend the money to get the Mk II. The AF, 12 FPS mech., and 20 FPS elec., 4K/60 have all been plenty for my use. Others may have more demanding needs. The R5, R7, and suite of RF lenses have proven to be an upgrade in performance, focal range, and lighter travel weight than their EF predecessors. I think I'm good for the foreseeable!
