p.1 #1 · Flowers grow in the most amazing places V2

I went back another day after my first attempt did not yield the results I wanted. The flower is growing on a mound in Badlands National Park with a multicolored mound behind it. My original processing was done on my laptop and apparently the calibration was off. I'm now home and have processed this image on my desktop. Interestingly, the day after I took this photo, the flowers were gone. Apparently some creature must have had a snack.

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Morris

That was a great find Morris! And it was evidently meant just for you (and the snacker), since it was gone so quickly. Heh.

Super nice subtle colors and patterns, that would make a great desktop background

Thank you Eric,

I bet photographing the creature eating it would have made a great photo as well. Probably a bighorn sheep or a pronghorn.

That’s a fascinating color palette — I photograph a lot in the desert, including during flower season, and I don’t recall seeing anything exactly like it.

Well seen and processed. It is tempting to jack up the saturation and contrast in images like these and it is good you didn't fall for it.

While I have less experience in the desert than you do Dan, the background mound in the Yellow Mounds area of Badlands NP is the only time I've seen anything like this. It's in a very prominent location yet most people are looking in different directions. The day after I took this photo, the flowers were gone, probably eaten by bighorn sheep.

Thank you Rojan,

I used a CPL and very gentle processing.

The colors in the soil/rocks are really interesting because I've only really seen that kind of color in the landscapes of Landmannalaugar -- in a nature preserve in south-central Iceland. Nicely done.

Nice imaging Morris. I like the geometric elements. Even if there's no bird in there!

Loving the layers here. The word "subtle" has been used appropriately a lot already to describe the colors, lighting and processing, so I'll just echo that as well.

Only because you're asking for suggestions, have you considered shaving a tiny (tiny) bit off the bottom? I find that segment of the image to play an important role in its success, but might benefit from taking a little bit less emphasis away from the top. Just a thought. It's great as-is and might better fit your vision without an edit.

Thank you Greg,
The mounds are sediment of an ancient sea bed and still turn to mud when it rains.

Thank you,

Taking a tiny bit off the bottom makes the image flow a little better.
