p.1 #1 · December in Dolomites Road Trip Advice

Hi,

I have an upcoming travel to Dolomites in December. I will fly to Munich on December 2 from KEF and back to KEF from Munich on December 12, 2025. I could have flown to Venice but scheduling wise, Munich was a better choice.
I love to photograph the winter scenery of the Dolomites!

I have never been to Dolomites and need much advice from all of you as to where to, what to look for, and road closing, etc.
I also would like to know if there are any good drone flying areas as well.

Thanks a lot!!

Kee

Tre Cime road will be closed so unless you plan on doing an all day snow shoe I would cross that location off your list.
Access to most other areas should be ok, but if you want to be in certain locations at sunrise or sunset it is much more difficult than if you are fine being there a couple hours before or after.

Drones are OK in most places from what I can recall.

Actually there are really few places where you can (legally) fly your drone in Dolomites.
Rules are becoming day by day more strict, but we must put them to ensure that no only us, but also our children will be able to see the mountains as they are: drones are really dangerous for wildlife, that in that area is not so dense.
Please try to respect therm.
You can’t fly it in all Natural Reserves (I.E. Sennes-Braies or Tre Cime) and in all Natura Parks and National Parks.
Obviously, you can ignore the rules and fly anyway, but beware that you can be fined (also after coming back home).
Val di Fassa started doing this for content posted on YouTube.
As always, you can ignore the fine, but you will get an open position the next time you will enter in Italy.
Nowadays it means nothing, but in the future, who knows…

Coming back to your question: all high altitude huts are obviously closed, but the ones related with sky.
You can surely reach 5 Torri, Averau and Nuvolau (closed) by cableways, not sure about Lagazuoi and Seceda.
Probably yes, because of Olympics.
Given the last years weather conditions, you might even be lucky and get some autumnal colors, with yellow larch somewhere.
Snow happened quite early but before December it had already melted down, up to 1800m.
You will get snow on the peaks, 100% sure.

Tre cime area is reachable only by foot and/or with some ($$$) guides.
If you are decently trained, it is a nice walk.
From Antorno lake it will take around 3h (400m positive ascent) to reach Rifugio Auronzo. Consider 1h to reach Locatelli.
All without photo stops and snow on the ground.
From Val Pusteria the hike will be harder (around 950m positive ascent)
It you are quite adventurous, Locatelli is a CAI hut, (Italian alpine club) and thus it has a (free but unattended) winter shelter, no heating, electricity and no water.
In the case you will experience it, be sure of leaving the door closed and the shelter clean: no one will clean it up to end of may.
Snow shoes are mandatory in that area: it is a basin, so the snow has a hard time melting.
Braies is always open, but probably with little to no water, you will be able to get reflections, but no boat daisy chain.
I warn you not to try to reach Sorapis, the reach is insidious and the lake will be almost empty: high risk, no reward.

There are a lot of other places to visit, I.e. Seiser Alm or San Giovanni in Randi, quite easy to reach with a car.
Carezza lake will be probably empty as well.

No Milky Way in the sky, so phase yourself for sunrises and sunsets.
Unfortunately, beginning of December is not the best moment to visit Dolomites, and this year it will costs you a bit more due to Olympics.
The other side is that you will be able to experience the mountains as they should be, almost alone, not in a continuous cue like we have seen the last summer: trust me, a real nightmare.
If you cross fingers and the weather will be with you, you will have the possibility to come back home with really memorable shots.
