It has been about 5 years since I shot a HS football game. This is also the first one since I went mirrorless. I forgot how much I love it. I also really miss having a 400 2.8...One day.
Bravo on the reception photo! I don't think HS parents realize how difficult it is to get an image like this. EVERYTHING has to go "right." You have to be in the "right" place as a photograher, using the "right" lens, the QB has to throw it to the "right" receiver, said receiver has to be facing in the "right" direction, the DB has to be in the "right" place to create conflict and the receiver has to catch the darn thing. That's a lot of things going right. And in your case you also had great lighting. It didn't happen at 9:14 PM under the lights.
Once you start to get to D1 (even D2 in some cases) and above you often have photographers covering the field in quadrants. Still a tough shot to get but the odds are greatly improved. We have become a little desensitied to these as a result. Good ones like this are still unicorns at the HS level.
I had a parent pay me to cover their player -- a WR -- on a run-heavy HS team and I really had to go over the odds with them. QB, RBs, and yes even linemen, I can guarantee some great action shots. WR/TE/CB/S -- well, hope spirings eternal.

Great shots. Too bad the backgrounds are so busy. Nobody needs a soccer goal that close the the football field!
Thank you!
