Filter solution needed

p.1 #1 · Filter solution needed

I got a leica q3 28 and the shutter speed is very limited at 1/2000. ES is garbage. So I'd like to use an nd filter but i prefer using a hood. So can anyone provide a solution that is very fast and easy to switch between using and not using an nd fitler while using a hood?

I've seen the polar pro, which is one of the better options. But I can't find how well, if at all, it allows stacking filters. I also don't like the fact that people commonly cite the hinge as a point of failure, as removing the somewhat snug lens hood can put strain on the hinge. I also just don't like the look as much with the hinge. And i think it's overpriced. But it is one possibility.

Another is a round hood like the jjc, leica, or hogue. This seems reasonable, but I'm specifically looking at getting magnetic filters for speed, and I'm curious how easy they would be to put on and remove with that hood?

I don't want to have to screw and unscrew anything. I'd like to leave a hood in permanently and simply attach a magnetic nd filter or col when needed. Does anyone know if this is possible?

You could try modifying the JJC Inset Filter, removing the glass, then relocking a thin magnetic frame inside, then using whatever smaller diameter magnetic filter inside of that. But then youd need a strong magnetic pulling tool for the filter and test how much it would add vignette since it's the 28mm.

I have the polar pro and yes, the cap is a tight fit, but simply flipping down the hood to push the cap off is as easy as it gets. I don't know if you can stack filters or not, but I've had an Urth magnetic filter ring in addition to the filter with no issues.

I haven't tried this on a Q but I use Kase magnetic on some other cameras and love them. Easy to snap on/off.

So the urth magnetic filter fits? Hmmm. What is your experience with the lens cap and the hinge durability? Also can you leave the magnetic ring in place and still use the macro mode? Is it possible for you to test that with the stock hood? Or is it impossible to add and remove the filters with the stock hood?
