Sony A7CR post

Sony's new Imaging Edge Software is the Program Sony uses for the new A7CR, however it will not work if you have Windows 7. Also the old Imag Data Converter Software will not work with the A7CR photos either. I can still use that one for the A7R. I can transfer A7CR images to my computer using a card reader, but can not open or edit the photos. Does anyone know of a way to open these? Hard to believe a company would sell you thousands of dollars of equipment and not include software that worked on systems they previously allowed.you to use. I do not wish to go out and buy a new computer, especially since I hate Windows 10. I actually paid to have it taken off and Windows 7 installed when I purchased my computer.

Windows 7 reached end of support January 14, 2020. It's unreasonable to expect that SOny would make software compatible with such an old OS.

The main concern is that an old computer from the Win 7 era (CPU released before 2017), like 6th Gen iNtel will be sucky slow anyway.

I'm using DXO PL8 in W10 (PL9 also works) and that is very good for processing a7rV files if you have a strong GPU. Windows 10 is reaching the end of support in October so eventually 11 will be needed for new software.

On you to know system requirements before investing in new technology. You should have done better research.

You really think Sony should support their latest applications on an OS that Microsoft doesn’t even support. That’s a big ask is it not?

I do think Sony should have something A7CR will work with, if you are using Win 7, if not the new software, then the old, which they still have out there to work on older A7R files. Microsoft reminds me of the mob coming around collecting for protection - They keep upgrading and it's like buy up or we will mess you up. Personally I HATE windows 10.

It will be difficult to find any image processing software that works with Win7. However, software that works with 7 will most likely still work in 10 and 11.

From what I understand the a7CR has basically the same sensor as the other 61MP Sonys.
My issue with the Sony software a few years ago for the a7rIV was that it was nearly worthless for NR. I'm not sure if you only are using low ISO or have other experience with that sensor, but it really benefits from modern processing.

Microsoft does not force you to upgrade, but it just stops support for older versions. Your existing software and hardware continue to run on the older OS. What do you really expect Microsoft to do?

One idea I had was to find some software that works in Win7 and supports the a7rIV if there is any. Then you might try changing the header of the a7CR file to look like an a7rIV.

Thanks for the input everyone
jwpstl - The guy at the store said, if it doesn't work with the new software, it should work with the old one. The real research is trying it out.
Chez - I know you can still use it, but when they keep creating new versions, you can't even find a printer that will work. From the perspective of an oldie, Why would I want to keep learning a new less friendly program that I hate, when I have a perfectly good more friendly software. Camera companies such as Sony add new cameras to their old programs, in versions, so it's not that hard. With the A7CR, Image Data Processing, the old one won't work with the A7CR and the new Image Edge, won't work with Win 7.

EB-1 - My ISO's are not over 400, usually 100 or 200. I tried the DXO PL8 and same thing, they have required Win 10 for a while. Thanks for the advice on changing the header of the File. The header is the DSC number right? I"ll see if there is any way to do that.

No, not the filename. I mean the part of the file that contains EXIF and other identifying info about the RAW RGB encoding.

Norman, it's tough I know but you are trying to force the status quo to an entire industry that has moved on and that simply is not going to happen, ever! Assuming you do enjoy and want to continue with your photography then you are going to have to shed the current thinking and dive into newer technology. Next question to wrestle with is how old are the specs of your current computer?

Windows 7 hasn't received security patches in 5 years. Windows 10 will be end-of-life next month. It makes little sense for Sony to support a 16 year old operating system that exposes users to known security vulnerabilities.

It is fine to use old tech in isolation. But modern cameras are tightly integrated with computers and the internet. If you want the latest camera, you need to keep your processing tools up to date as well.

You might try FastStone Image Viewer. They're system requirements start with Windows XP so it should run on win7.

Thanks EB-1 for the info

Thank you JeffBuzz - Such Good news! Fastone will have to be the one I use for now and I will donate to them. I saved a lot of my better pics now with Fastone, from my first use of the A7CR. I can open them full size and bring up shadows a little and pull down highlights a little and save as a tiff. Later I will save as a PSD file, when I start working on them. Funny how a FREE program has no problem making all things work together. I'm still using the last PS that came in a box, because I also do not want subscriptions or being tied to the Apron strings of a tech Giant, just to access my own work..

schlotz - Thanks for your input - I do get it, but but I still can't force myself to even focus on the newer technology - It makes me too annoyed I guess I have a block against learning it, and I'm the last holdout for getting a Smartphone - I had no problem all through the 90's, with the advancing technology, until Win 8. Now IMHO looking back, Big tech has to change to keep the money flowing and they have run out of good ideas, so they push crap. Wait until AI takes on more than just not answer your questions when you call, since they are programed to only talk about certain things.
