p.1 #1 · Canon R5 Mark II (and R3) - Latest Fimware Updates ? | |
I'm interested in the long-term experiences and evaluations of the latest Firmware update for the Canon R5 Mark II (v.1.1.1) - and secondarily for the R3 (v 1.9.0).
I''m no sports shooter but into serious nature photography (mostly wildlife and birds, landscapes, occasionally macros and a bit of general travel photography, too). Up to now, I've been capturing stills for around 70-80% but video is increasingly getting important, too.
On my R5 Mark II , I'm still on v1.0.2 and so far I'm content with the AF and general functionality. I didn't update to 1.0.3 after I read about mixed experiences that had been reported in an earlier thread here and elsewhere . Quite a few user complained about a slower AF, issues in acquiring and tracking subjects, in fact worse AFcapabilities than before. Some even went back to v.1.0.2 since they found the AF and tracking being messed up in v. 1.0.3.
And some weeks ago, v 1.1.1 has been quickly published after v.1.1.0 had surprisingly been pulled back, shortly after the release. Actually, Canon's QC and digilence prior to rushing a fw update out could be considered somewhat questionable, at least with regard to the past firmware releases. That's why I have been holding off updating to 1.1.1, too, up to now.
That said, the most important (and from my POV nearly only benefit of v.1.1.1) is the ability to set the number of shots captured in pre-continuous shooting mode .From what I've seen, Canon unfortunately still is unable to provide a simple optional configuration of a button to switch the pre-shooting mode on or off. Canon CPS reps had already announced this desired option for a firmware update a year ago. Also, the possibility to directly change the time of the pre-continuos shooting would have been an improvement, IMO..
I have not delved into the real background of that PW requirement yet. Since it fortunately (!) can -and needs to - be checked off after the initial entry, unless you want to enter the PW each time again after the camera has been powered off or has gone into the sleep mode, I don't see the benefit and reason of this unexpected requirement - maybe aside from tracking (you) ;-)
Anyway, the optional adaptation of the pre-continuous shooting make me finally think of the upgrade to v.1.1.1 - but definetly not at the cost of any AF-issues previously reported for v. 1.0.3. - especially not in advance of my important photo trip. Consequently, the key question, then, is how the AF capabilities built into v.1.1.1 compare to the previous versions, specifically v.1.0.2. In other words, have the issues of 1.0.3 been fixed in v.1.1.1 so that the tracking, focus aquiring, AF speed etc. are at least on the same reliable and good level as in v 1.0.2 (or even improved) ?? Any comments and experiences as for the AF are very much appreciated. Of course, any other findings and insights into the changes in v.1.1.1 are also welcome.
As for the R3, some people also feel that the auto focus isn't as good as it was before upgrading to v.1.9.0 and doesn't seem to lock on as quick and hunts around a bit. On a facebook R3 group several users obviously reported the same issue. Personally, I haven't seen and checked those posts because I'm not on Facebook. In case of doubt, I personally skip the upgrade to v.1.9.0. or wait until things have been clarified, at least. The R3 has no pre-continuous shooting and thus not this benefit of an immediate upgrade for me. Any comments and opinions on the R3 with regard to the firmware upgrade to 1.9.0 are apreciated, too
Thank you very much in advance
