I would like to let a friend of mine borrow my 300 GM for a trip to Africa. He shoots Nikon. What is the best Sony to Nikon adapter I could recommend for him to purchase

Assuming you mean a modern, Z-mount Nikon...the Megadap ETZ21 PRO+. I use one and it works well. Also seems to be well supported by the company with firmware updates for compatibility..
