p.1 #1 · 18mm F2 Focusing Error

Hello all,

I just picked up the Fujinon 18mm f2 second-hand and since arriving home I’ve noticed that anytime I try close-focusing I’m suddenly unable to move the focus point, the camera freezes and shortly thereafter displays an error message: TURN OFF THE CAMERA AND TURN ON AGAIN

Has anyone experienced this with their 18mm f2 lens in the past? Especially curious if anyone has been using the 18mm lens with an X-E5, as I wonder if it could be a camera-specific firmware issue?

The seller says he never experienced anything like it on his X-Pro2 or X-T5.

I don't know if there is a specific issue with the camera and lens, but as a first matter, have you tried cleaning the contact points between the lens and your camera with an appropriate cleaning solution? This is sometimes the cause of errors that result in "turn off the camera" messages.

I haven’t as yet, so that is for sure my next step. Much appreciated! I hope I can find a solution, as the lens is so nice and compact.

Interesting thing to add… the same fault is triggered by manually focusing down to the minimum focus distance. And it makes a heck of a racket while doing it…

Any ideas/thoughts would be appreciated!

All I can suggest is checking the lens firmware is up to date, but it sounds like a mechanical issue to me.

Cleaning the camera and lens contacts has already been mentioned so the only other thing I can think of is that a filter or lens hood may be interfering with the movement of the lens.

GL!

Thanks to everyone for your replies! I ended up taking the lens in to my local camera shop and observed the same thing on their X-T5, so the lens is indeed malfunctioning in some way.

I posted on Reddit as well and a bunch of 18mm owners tried with their cameras and couldn’t repeat the flaw, which cemented for me that it’s the lens and not the firmware of the X-E5.

Luckily, my seller is a standup guy and has agreed to take the lens back.

The front section moves in and out on that lens, debris, damage, or any obstruction to that movement will cause the error you're getting. Since you mention it's also extra noisy when close focusing, it sounds like some mechanical issue and will need repair/cleaning.
