When I made money from my photography through Sports, portraiture, weddings, etc., I printed all of the time and owned three printers 17”, 24”, 48”. After moving and moving on to where I shoot only as a hobby, I still have two printers 17”, 24” and print my WL work mainly for myself, F&F, charity events, and the rare commission.

I have pretty much given up printing myself. Recently I have switched to printing on aluminum and canvas wraps exclusively for images I sell or give away. I still have any interesting image printed for my own use.

My printer is clogged and it's too much for me to move.

Looking at images is, to me, such a transitory experience. I have a wall where I just hang prints on somewhat of a temporary basis, say 2-4 weeks. Looking at them for a few weeks gives me feedback on what I like and sometimes, things I don’t like.

At the same time, while I love the finished product, the process of getting there can be extremely frustrating. I think I’m a better photographer because I print.

I had to sell my large format printer a couple years ago and I’ve missed it a TON.

For the 3 years prior to that, I liked to buy a 18x24 or so size portfolio binder with 24-50 “views” and I would print my favorite 24-50 photos from that year. Kinda a large format version of scrapbooking lol.

As soon as I can get more settled I am at least going to resume the practice, although I may need to settle on a 13” printer and do 12x18s in a 13x19 portfolio binder.

I'm just getting into printing for myself with an Epson ET-8550. Reasonably inexpensive to run and learn on. Truthfully, I think the prints from it look great. Previously I was printing a few images each year with a company online. I will still use the online service for heavier papers and specialty printing.

I do all of my own printing. We have several printers ranging up to a P9000. The only times a photo gets out without me printing it are when I license a file for reproduction in a publication or very rare cases when the client prints it much larger than I can. (I’ve had stuff printed up to 30’ wide.)

So, reasons I print:

1. For sales, exhibits, and similar.

2. To refine the image for print. The first attempt usually reveals the potential for further refinement, so initial prints are always small as I work on them.

I used to print all the time when I was doing shows and selling. It's been a long time though. I used an Epson R1800. Last time I tried firing that baby up it was badly clogged and wasn't "cleaning" despite running a ton of expensive ink through it.

I'm retired now and thinking about starting up again. I always enjoy having the finished product in my hand and my photography feels a bit empty when I don't do prints. I can't seem to find anyplace local to me that evens offers a quality printing service.

My large format printer head tanked about 6 years ago and I haven't bothered printing since. I have sent out a couple for print, but that's it. More recently I am using digital frames.

Thank you everyone for responding! I appreciate your input..everyone's!

As far as space goes, yes you only have so many walls. But have you considered portfolio boxes to store your prints and bring them out when company comes over for viewing. People seem to like holding an actual print for viewing than looking at an image on a screen…at least that is what I’ve observed.

Another way of handling multiple images that you'd like to see from time to time but don't want or have space to hang on walls is to do what I think I have seen in photographs of Sally Mann's home and studio -- place prints in mats propped up in various places where they can be seen. Use different sized prints to fit the images and the spaces.

This also makes it very easy to rotate your print collection. I find that rotating prints keeps the images fresher and more engaging as they are seen.

I started printing images from my travels a few years back. These images are now hanging on my wall at the office and some around house. The rest make it into coffee books which I have throughout my home or I gift them to family. Like others have said, printing a photograph is the end result of pressing that shutter.

Still print some. Mostly small 4x6, 5x7 pics of the grandkids or occasional 8x10. Small home so running out of wall space . Just wonder how much longer I can get ink for my old canon pro printer

Printing is a great way to enjoy the end result of your work or hobby. Not for self-admiration but more to complete the photo end process. Printing can be an art of its own after you delve into archival papers, inks, and ways of display. It can be very satisfying even if for your own walls and enjoyment.

This is a great printer and what I use. 5 dye-based ink tanks and 1 pigment-based ink tank (used for black on fine art papers). The top feed slot can easily handle thick 310 gsm papers (smooth cotton rag). Google Keith Cooper to see all of his Youtube videos regarding this printer and what papers work best. He will also e-mail you profiles for your paper and be sure to send him a coffee donation.

In the past I have owned nice 10 ink pigment-based printers but the expense of pigment cartridges keeps them idle The Epson refillable ink tanks on the 8550 is the way to go and still get great quality prints. If you need big and large then a print service is the way to go.

I love to print, just like Chez mentioned, to me it is the final step in photography. I have a 44 wide printer which I often use for Gallery Exhibit prints, I print for clients and myself. I use it to print canvas wraps or regular prints. In the end, to me nothing beats a large print.

I am happy it is not becoming a "lost art".

I’m just getting started out of an interest to improve my photography. I had a consumer low end inkjet I would print 4x6 to share with family. Consumer plus now with an 8550 epson so I can get a little bit more out of pano shots. Maybe here and there I’ll give prints to friends and family.

I print a fair bit, most of it at home on my still going Canon Pro-100. As such, most of my prints are 12x18 or 12x16. A lot of my prints are on my walls at home and I have about 8 prints on my wall at work that I rotate out when I get a new shot I want to print.

If I need larger than 12x18, I usually get it printed at ProDPI.

Your "rotating pictures" is the right idea!

p.2 #19 · How Many Members Still Print Their Own Photography?

Hey Dan I have been on this forum for 18 years now! I had not ever printed any of my work shamefully. I had sent 5 images out to a recommended printer and all came back way less to my expectations so I gave up on that.

Just in the last year I saw an encouraging thread about the affordable Epson EP-8550 printer and after some study I went for it. I couldn't be happier for my investment and return The amazing support I also received from Red River paper and their wonderful info on this printer helped me along. Much more fun to have control over your own work IMO. I am sure that the high high end printers have a bit more capability if your files demand it ............. mine don't and you know what I shoot

So I just got into printing my own work, no one else was doing it.

I have been here 21 years and for about 10 years I did do all my own printing. I was still working then and my 2 offices allowed me to hang a few.
When I retired after 40 years......I lost all my "audience".

I used Red River paper 100% Karl.

I have not printed a photo in many years. There is just no "audience" for my prints. Also the cost of "cleaning the ink jets" repeatedly has me going broke!

I was just wondering how many members still print their own photos.
I am glad you have an "audience" for your images!

I can't even give them away.

Summers last "blast" of heat is here. Then I hope for the cooler, drier weather comes in.
Thanks for stopping by!
Dan
