Watching Joel's recent photos from Iceland reminded me that I need to go through my own from a trip I took there three years ago. I spent some time at the stunning Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon in South Iceland, a place that looks like it's straight out of a fairy tale.
The canyon is about 1.25 miles long and 328 feet deep, with a unique, serpentine shape carved by the Fjaðrá river. As I walked along the viewing platforms, I was captivated by its otherworldly atmosphere, with twisting walls, irregular boulders, and soft patches of moss. Sharing few images I captured during my brief visit.
Man, those shots are cool....I wanted to go there however we just didn't have enough time to hit everything. The one impression about Iceland that I was left with was how out of this world a lot of the county is. It doesn't matter where you go it just seems as though it's something you will never see again or you have never seen anything like it or as you put it, it has an "otherworldly atmosphere" The place is a nature lovers dream. Just so much to see in so little time. Im not sure I have seen so many waterfalls in one place before. Of course I voted for these!
Since you welcomed CC, I’ll share a couple of observations. One is a pretty small thing and the other a big more substantial. Both concern the first photograph, a scene that I think is very attractive.
1. Because of how dark the central canyon is, I suspect you opened up a bit to make sure that it wasn’t underexposes, a thought that I agree with. Right up at the top edge of the image, where the clouds are brightest, they look to be pure white along that edge. Someone once pointed out ot me that when you print it can define that edge a bit if you back off on the luminosity a bit so that there’s a bit of ink on the paper even in the withe areas. (Otherwise the edge can just merge with paper white.)
2. The main interest in that first photograph — and a lot of interest it is! — seems to me to be in the right 2/3 of the image, with the left third almost seeming to distract from it a bit since it is lighter. I wonder what a square crop would look like, one that kept the right edge where it is and eliminated the some of the stuff on the far left? (You might even try it in a 3:4 vertical vertical “portrait” format?)
Nice photos. I hope that’s the sort of CC you were looking for!
Thanks Frank, it is an incredible location and I found it to be hard to photograph. Glad it came out well.

Thanks Joel, glad you found the set to be worthy of your vote. There is so much to shoot in Iceland! It's a super photo rich country. Most folks don't spend much time to RK but I spent a total of 5 days exploring so many parts of RK and found so many amazing spots. I have so many images to go thru......

That is some canyon You describe is well, it is otherworldly atmosphere. Good job and soft light was helpful in this scene.
Yes, this place just has that type of feel and overcast light added to the mood.

Parul: the third one is compelling, something not commonly photographed.
Thanks Rajan, it was a rather difficult to shoot with older DSLR as the metal platform has lots of motion and the railing it high with makes it difficult to balance the tripod.

Dan, thanks a lot for your detailed feedback. Yes, it’s definitely helpful. I do agree with crop suggestion. I will check on the edges when I get hope. Thanks 🙏
