p.1 #1 · Best camera backpack with 1) side access 2) laptop compartment?

Hi,

My question is as titled.

Some background: currently I have a Lowepro ProTactic 350 which has side access. I like side access backpacks because you can fling it to one shoulder and access the camera without taking the whole bag off. However, this bag is a little small and does not fit a 15" laptop.

I am aware that Lowepro has a larger model, the ProTactic 450. But I am curious if you have experience with any other brands/models?

Thanks in advance,
Howard

I had (still have?) the same issue as you. In addition to all your requirements, I also wanted a side holder for my water bottle/coffee mug.

It didn't exist. I ended up getting a Kata 3n1-33. There is the medium Kata (3n1-22) but I don't think it fits a 15" laptop. The 33 easily fits and offers great flexibility, but it's just too large for what I need. It's just been collecting dust ever since I got it.

I use a variety of medium backpacks and have to compromise, depending on what I'm doing that day.

The Gura Gear City Commuter and the midsized Shimoda packs have side access and will carry a 15" laptop.

That’s the unfortunate reality of camera packs. I don’t blame the manufacturers — I cannot see how it would be possible to design a light, protective, large enough but not too large, laptop holding, suitable for tail use, equipped with great strap system for comfort and load, carry-on size, top/bottom/side loading pack…

… that would weight less than about 10 lbs!

That means that we really have little choice but to have more than one.
