p.1 #1 · X2Dii What Role Does the Phocus Desktop App. Play?

Goal here would be to end up with a high resolution (HDR) JPG.

In this example I started with a 211.8 MB 3FR File

#1. Imported 3FR into Phocus Desktop without making any adjustments, I exported an UltraHDR JPEG Full Size resulting in an 8.8MB JPEG.

#2. Next imported 3FR directly into Lightroom and exported a JPEG with HDR P3 color space resulting in 60MB JPEG

#3. Lastly, import 3F into Phocus, export a TIFF file. Import Tiff into Lightroom. Exported to JPEG with HDR P3 color space resulting in a 57MB JPEG

So, I didn’t make any adjustments in post to any of these three JPEGs.

It seems that Phocus exports rather small JPEG compared to Lightroom. So, in theory #1 and #3 should represent the Hasselblad color pallet and #2 would be solely Adobe.

Lightroom alone generates large JPEG and the workflow, along with the JPEG directly above represent a fast solution with few steps.

The most complicated approach was locking in colors with Phocus and exporting the Tiff to Lightroom.

Without any adjustment the direct Lightroom JPEG is the brightest when compared to the Phocus processed colors/brightness. There might be finer textures in the Phocus images, but this might just be a difference in brightness. I find it difficult to find any major differences. Perhaps those of you with a more discerning eye could comment.

I think the color differences between HNCS and Adobe's Camera Standard profile are quite obvious if you've a subtle eye for such things, with HNCS colors and gradations being more pleasing to me at least.

That said, working in Phocus (desktop) is a miserable experience. The Phocus 2 Mobile app is much better for basic type adjustments, and you can still export to a TIFF to move to your LR desktop for more work. It's not a great workflow to be sure.

There are some psychos that do ALL their editing in Phocus desktop...I can't even imagine! I'd think if it's an archival quality shot, you'd do well to maintain HNCS and edit from there...if it's a bang-around image, LR editing suffices quite often.

When using this camera and other FF cameras, especially when I’m trying to preserve a dramatic sky and preserve the foreground, I’m always riding the exposure compensation dial. I was hoping that HDR and the exposure mode used would allow me to shoot without modifying exposure compensation. So, at least in the scene that I used this morning, highlights were mostly preserved without any settings in camera, or in post.. other than shooting with HDR engaged.
With respect to colors, I added a direct to Lightroom image with the exposure reduced.
