I recently traded the new GM II for the 85 1.8 Sony. Despite some CAs it renders really beautifully. It is optically nearly identical to the Batis. In my experience, the Batis lenses with IBIS suffer from malfunctioning on newer Sony bodies. At least that is my experience with the 85 and the 135 Batis on Sony a9 III/ a1 and RV. They seem to over compensate or not working together with the cameras IBIS. This leads to not perfect sharp images in quite some shots (on my latest bodies to at least 4 out of 10 +/-). The 85 1.8 is as asharp as the Batis, but lacks the IBIS, which is a plus on the newer bodies.

Why did you trade the GM II for the 85 1.8? Was it weight? Or did you not see enough of a difference in image quality?

Well, my gear tends to fluctuate from time to time quite a bit But I did not really use the 85 a lot. So the cheap 85 1.8 does suffice. I really think its one of the best bang for the buck lenses you can buy in the sony eco system. Its really sharp in the center at 1.8 and even the corners are not bad at all. It lightweight, fast AF.. whats not to like? Ok, the CAs can be visible wide open, but thats it.

Funnily enough, I think OP would do a google search instead of posting here, if he thought the same as you.
Funnily enough, the way you discover personal opinions is completely irrelevant to the end result. It makes no difference whether you go directly to a forum or take the detour via Google. The only difference (besides the social aspect) is that you'll find significantly more opinions on Google than in a single thread in a single forum. That's why I always have to laugh at classic threads like, "On the internet, you always read this and that in forums. Is that really true? What are your opinions?"

I don't know why you're trying to make this about me, while it is you who's trying to make random opinions from google equal to the ones expressed by people regularly posting here...

That wasn't directed at anyone personally, but meant as a very general statement. I'm sorry if I phrased it incorrectly. And why anyone (other than yourself) should consider other opinions in other forums "random" but yours as authoritative is beyond me. It seems to be similar to taste here. Everyone considers his own to be better than someone else's, as long as they don't agree.
But this banter really doesn't help anyone. You've expressed your opinion, I've expressed mine, and a few other people have expressed theirs. The OP reads the whole thing and then decides for himself and draws his own conclusions. I don't know what the problem is. Probably, as in 9 out of 10 cases, it's just bruised pride of ownership. I don't know.

So, you confirm that you equalize random opinions all over the net with the regulars here.
Thank you.

I don't reccomend the Samyang 75mm over the Ttartisan 75mm. Samyang doesn't have great color reproduction, is more expensive, and less sharp than than the TT

I had the Sony 85mm and somewhat regret selling it as it is a good performer and light. I got a Sigma 1.4 and find this a better lens but it is a lot heavier and fatter. Given what you said I’d give the Sony a try. A 75mm lens is not an 85mm lens either, so the field of view difference with a 50mm is greater and, to me, more useful.

I still think the Batis 85mm/f1.8 is the best option.
In addition to most other options it has IBIS.
Performance is very close to the new GM II 85/1.4:

Does that mean you don't use it or you won't sell it?

As I stated, I tried to find a clean Batis 85 in the Paris area, but no luck. I'm sure it is a fine lens (I had the 2/40 previously, I was never head of heals in love with it and ended up going with the 35 GM instead).
At the end of the day, we are very spoiled with 85mm choices on the Sony E mount. Any of these choices is good enough for my purposes, just wanted to double-check people's thoughs on the Sony 85/1.8.
Then it is more about actually spending time in the field with the lens and learning its ins and outs, strengths and weaknesses, and necessary workarounds - just like with any photography equipment.

I can't bring myself to sell it. the original copy I had purchased had the IBIS in the lens go bad, so I paid them $300 for a "refurbished" one in lieu of repair.

Hey OP,
I was exactly on the same situation. Wanted primes for a family trip to Paris, and other places. Since I had the 20mm 1.8 and I wanted to complete the trio I went with the 35/85 from Sony.
They are good lenses. IQ is good, sharp wide open and, if you compare to the 35/2.8 at lest, very little vignetting. It helps that AF is super fast for my toddler and I wanted to keep everything Sony but not break the bank.
Best of all, they can all fit together with my A7Cr inside of a small Peak Design shoulder bag. Plus I can fit a Pocket 3, two batteries and my wallet in the front pocket. Granted it is a little bit of Tetris going on but one small shoulder bag fits everything I need.

I've been happy enough with what I've seen from the Sony 85/1.8 so far. I sure wouldn't call it an inspiring lens, but it gets the job done well enough for how much I use the focal length at this point.
I know the 85/1.4 GM II is the one to get, but I cannot justify that spend at this moment.
Viltrox Pro was certainly a contender, but 30% more expensive and twice the weight.
