The 55 is solid, but unremarkable IMO. I’m glad to have saved $1,000 or so on it. I prefer my 90V and 25V. I thought I was going to return the 25V after a week due to the size and weight, but the IQ is really good. I’m usually not a wide angle guy but 4:3 aspect ratio makes that wide angle perspective more versatile. I know I’ll use it a ton on a trip next month.

It's an irrelevant side discussion...just because I like a lens or make a compelling image with one of them, doesn't mean it's right for someone else, or that they'd get photos of the same caliber by simply using it.

I don't think the 55V is a BAD lens, but it's a little bucket of compromises that costs about 50% more than it's worth IMO. I find my extremely similar (format adjusted) FL/aperture Voigtlander creates far more compelling images, for me, at less than 1/12th the price and works on far more cameras.

Being pretty on a camera, or having a nice feeling MF clutch doesn't budge my needle like it does for some others, though, so, you know, grains of salt.

Considering your love of the 55mm, would you travel with the 20-35mm with the 55V and 90V, or just go with the 35-100mm? I appreciate your informed view with regards to these lenses.

Depends on the situation but I expect that mostly I’ll have 2 bodies (Earth Explorer and X2D2) and the 20-35, 35-100 and a 135/TC in a hip bag. Maybe I’ll replace the 135/TC if a decent telezoom zoom arrives. I’ll still always take a 28P, 55V and 90V as well. Sometimes I just take one body and a 55V and a spare battery for a day. Or a three prime day. I’ll still want to do that. Also the primes are more useful as the sun goes down. Some days I’ll just take the X2D2 and 35-100 for a day. I don’t ever feel that there’s a perfect kit for every situation.

I have 2 x 55V’s. One is very good. The other is very very good. I have enough frames shot to know it quite well and while its weaknesses are real they mostly fall outside of the way I like to shoot. It’s certainly not my number one choice for a landscape lens, just like I wouldn’t choose the 20-35 for milky way photography (that’d be the 21mm 30mm or GFX 20-35). To me the 55V is more like choosing a Leica 50mm Summilux M over the APO Summicron. The latter may be *better* but sometimes the former makes nicer images. That’s how I feel about the 55V versus something like the XCD65.

The thing is, I haven’t yet travelled with the new zoom. I have with the 35-75 and a few Fuji zooms but not the 35-100. I’m shooting with it for a lark but I’ve been really busy moving into our new place for the last two months and there’s no big trips planned until next year. But from my month with the HB zoom I already know I really like it. I’m 90% sure it’ll be my primary travel lens going forward. It covers all the lenses I usually carry in one. It’s got great AF, optics and handling. It’s extremely consistent across its range. This could have been the only lens I needed for my entire India trip last year. And I do like less gear, if appropriate. However there have been days when the zoom stayed at home and the only lens I had with me was the 55V.

So to be sure, to be sure I’ll need a three week trip with the 6 lens kit and see how often I pull out the 28, 55 and 90. Time will tell. But I’ve still got the 55V in the bag.

Another fly in the ointment is I could leave the 55V at home and take a Q3-43 instead for night shooting etc….. Faster, smaller, lighter. So far I’ve never actually chosen the Q3-43 over the 55V on an X2D. But who knows?

There are no bad choices here so whatever is over my shoulder it won’t be the gear if my photos suck, again….

Gordon

Oh, I agree with you 100% on the irrelevancy but I was nonetheless curious to hear what floats your boat. No judgement just curious. I'm all over the board. I love Voigtlander's APO line but I also dig lenses with character (flaws).

Thanks for your in depth reply. I just received the 20-35mm and will have to adapt to such a large/heavy lens. Like you, I’m between travel shooting opportunities. I’ll look forward to your experience with your six lens kit. My travel kit will consist of a maximum of two lenses.

p.4 #7 · How Will You Use the Hasselblad XCD 35-100mm f/2.8-4 E Lens?

I received a call that my dealer received the 35-100 the other day. I just did a trip with the X2d ii and the only two XCD lenses I own - the 25V and the 90V. I rented the 38V for the trip as well. I realized that I tend to shoot at the two extremes and only used the 38V a few times. Sometimes it worked out, sometimes I wish I had the 55v as well.

I placed the order for the 35-100 when I got the call. I've looked at images made with the 35-100 and they look good, but I haven't owned a zoom lens in over ten years, so I'm still not sure If I made the right choice.

If anyone in the US is looking for a 35-100 brand new a dealer just informed me he has one. I already own one.
