Does a CFe Heat test chart exist?

p.1 #1 · Does a CFe Heat test chart exist?

So i switched to a Z6iii and finally was able use it moderately to actually make things go hot. In my setup I use an ancient Wifi SD card because it's still superior to software Nikon can offer. My issue is i'm cooking the SD card now because of the SD / CFE stack. Right now i'm on a 240GB Prograde Gold 4.0 and i'd basically heat soaking the SD card to non-operation. I'm doing a RAW + JPEG where the SD gets JPEG. So i'm losing JPEG images on the which grab off the camera using a phone. The RAW images are fine.

So are anyone know of any reviews dealing with some actual temperature statistics? Or suggestions. I'm only doing Photos so capacity and overall speed isn't a huge issue.

Try the Z6 III's FTP functionality - it's much better than their proprietary PC transfer feature.

Ok i'll have to look that up. It might be my final resort if i eventually cook the Wifi-Transmitters on these SD Card's i have. They're out of production but the app they have allows me to see thumbnails within like 2 seconds.

And i'll just have to find a client that download all images constantly. Battery drain will be the death of me though. Last time i tried Nikon's solution was on a D500 and my battery drained in 3 hours. With taking less than 100 photos but with power always on as i was intermittent enough to keep it from sleeping.

yeah, I get what you’re running into. The Z6 III is a beast, but the SD slot can get cooked fast when you’re throwing a lot of data at it, especially with a fast card like the ProGrade Gold 4.0. Shooting RAW+JPEG where the JPEGs hit the SD card basically turns it into a mini oven, and that’s why you’re losing those JPEGs when trying to grab them on your phone. The RAWs are safe on the CFexpress side, but the SD just can’t handle the heat and sustained writes.

Honestly, the easiest fix is to slow things down on the SD side, lower-speed cards handle heat better and still keep up for JPEGs. Another option is just to stick to the CFexpress slot for both RAW and JPEG if you can, which avoids the SD entirely. Offloading files regularly or using a card reader with temperature monitoring also helps keep things under control. That way, you don’t have to worry about heat soaking your card into oblivion while still shooting like a maniac.

Oh it's the CFE card that's cooking the SD card. The SD card has no problem keeping up with the JPEG write as I'm already doing lower quality JPEG then Normal. The SD card's controller get baked then the camera throws a can't write to card error. Which then i have to take the card out and reinsert it. And my former D500 never had an issue.

So other then everyone saying Delkin is really cool compared to others. I was looking to see if anyone knew of any reviews or writeups that actually put this to some kind of test.

I really don't want to resort to throwing the XQD card in it as it just feel wrong to do that.

Which CFexpress card are you using? Delkin Black and Prograde Digital Cobalt should be pretty cool-running while some other cards run really hot.

This graph illustrates the differences in temperature though of course it can depend on the specific device used and other factors

https://www.thessdreview.com/our-reviews/prograde-digital-cfexpress-type-b-gold-2-0-memory-card-review-high-capacity-high-sustained-writes-low-temp-finally/3/

However, these are not in all cases the latest-generation cards.

I noticed that google's AI gives very odd claims about the relative overheating performance. I sure hope people don't take those seriously and instead go to the original tests.

Delkin Black and even their less expensive Power 4.0 cards can keep up with the sustained write speeds needed for the Z6III, and shouldn’t get hot doing so. They’re rated 1200-1500mb/sec sustained write and even 8k raw is max something like 850mb/sec.

As for wireless tethering, there is a guy selling a file transfer solution via Patreon at the moment. He demos it with the Zf and I assume it works just as well with the 6III:

That software above looks helpful if i was doing this studio style.

I ordered what i think is an Old stock Delkin Power. We'll see when i get it. The New Delkin G4's are "Faster" so i assume with the write speed being faster it will generate more heat.

The card i'm using now is a 240GB Prograde Gold 4.0. It's not that the CFE card is overheating. It's producing so much heat that it's cooking the SD card. And the SD Card is the one i can't replace.
