p.2 #2 · Upgrading to the Hasselblad X2D Mark II

I really dont expect a lot of improvements, everything is becoming incremental with big big spins. Unless Sony can crack the next level in sensor technology, not much is happening. these days they talk about af and how much improvements there are every time they roll out a new camera.

I think whatever its out there now, is more than enough for 99.99% and then some.

I had the x1d and now x2d, it might be me, but I do enjoy a ‘slow’ camera more, I think I see more.

The lens market, is another story, so many good lenes are popping everywhere specially china. I would like to really thank them for their efforts and lots of goodies. I think that in turn is pushing the traditional manufacturers.

My G.A.S. is developing towards X2D II...

This topic is about upgrading but I'm not thinking about upgrading or replacing my 907x 100C. I'm thinking about getting X2D II to be used in more tactile situations and also keep my 907x for more slow paced stuff, landscapes for example, and to be used with my 500C film body.

Am I nuts? X2D II is basically the same camera with better auto focus and in-body image stabilization. Not to mention the obvious form factor and handling. My syndrome is in the justification phase where I'm trying to convince myself I indeed do need another camera to my arsenal. I'm seriously hoping this will fade out soon..

Shooting landscapes only, the new features seemed more important to portrait or faster object photographers; so holding off until the next model. Not immune to GAS either but typically looking at upgrades every other new releases instead of consecutively.

There are several improvements over mark 1 for landscape phonographer as well, but it is subjective whether they warrant the cost:
- shutter control port
- brighter LCD
- better tilting screen
- joystick
- better IBIS
- faster
- Auto-ISO in M mode
- more function buttons

p.2 #6 · Upgrading to the Hasselblad X2D Mark II

I just pulled the trigger for X2D II. I've been looking for that body since January-February and finally came across used one in pristine condition.

Finally, I can experience the viewfinder, the continuous auto-focus, the state-of-the-art IBIS - the features that often get praised and that I lack on my beloved 907x.

I have stated it numerous times that I hate EVFs, but apparently there are people that are trying to convince me not all EVFs are the same, that actually some of them are pretty decent I actually did not hate the EVF on Nikon Zf but ended up selling that body for other reasons. Didn't hate it but didn't deliver 'wow' effect neither (sorry Zf fans!)

Really looking into the IBIS. 100mpx can be ruthless with moderately slow shutter speeds (1/focal length isn't always enough to prevent motion blur).

I have high hopes for the continuous auto-focus (and auto-focus capabilities of this body in general!), too.

There are things that one must experience themselves. I can read numerous reviews and I can watch a bunch of Youtube videos for some camera but only after I get to try it myself I can really tell if it's for me or not, do I dislike something on it or is some influencer out-pointed disadvantage totally fine for me and my use cases.

Now I just have to wait for the delivery notice. And remember the fact I have now used my whole gear budget for this year ..and apparently for the NEXT YEAR altogether

It has been amazing. The IBIS is really powerful. If doubling the focal length as shutter speed did not guarantee motion-blur free images from my previously owned X1D II nor my 907x, X2D II is on another league. I can get sharp images at focal length shutter speeds or half of that, and even second or seconds long exposures turns out fine. Amazing camera.

Images are just pure magical. Dynamic range is extraordinary. HDR mode is true HDR, capturing crazy wide spectrum. Turns out I have understood HDR imaging from the times when it required capturing multiple frames with different shutter speeds to be stitched together in order to preserve detail in all areas of the image. HDR from X2D II retains natural look and contrast while also represents the highlights and bright areas very much like they actually appeared at the scene.

Ergonomics are quite good. The joystick is great but unfortunately a bit in a wrong place for my thumb to use naturally. EVF is one of the best I have ever used but I still find it a bit flat on bright sunny day. Currently photographing the glaciers at Western Norway and I think the back display is better for framing than the EVF. This is just a minor thing, though, and totally usable. It really shines in a bit less harsh lighting conditions.

Continuous auto-focus is very fast and accurate for this kind of camera. I wouldn’t compare it to some flagship Sony or Canon cameras but I wouldn’t do the comparison to those for any other spec either. This is primarily a landscape machine, and that’s what I’ve been using it for for a few weeks now. Occasionally snapping some pictures of my dog which is actually possible with the AF and which was not really a thing to enjoy with X1D II.

I feel sorry for my Leica. Hasselblad has gotten some heavy use lately. Can’t wait to see how it performs on winter and snowy scenes. Not that I would otherwise wait for winter, I’m more of summer season guy.

The joystick is probably the only thing I miss from the Leica SL. The Leica SL joystick is probably the best in the business.
