Curious to hear from any Canon R6 / R5 photographers who own or owned a Sigma 105mm lens as part of a kit with RF primes. I've read and watched reviews about the 105mm in past years. But I wanted to start a thread from scratch now that Canon photographers have had some years to experience the RF 85mm 1.2, RF 135mm 1.8 and mix and match other Canon and 3rd party lenses.
Have any of you ditched an RF prime for the 105mm? Added the 105mm? Ditched the 105mm?
Now and past, I have always enjoyed 85mm, 135mm and even 300mm primes. The 100mm never appealed, maybe because 2.8 was its limit.
I’ve actually had the Sigma 105mm on my R6 alongside the RF 85 1.2 and the RF 135 1.8, and while the 105mm is an absolute beast in terms of sharpness and contrast, it didn’t stay in rotation for long. It’s a solid portrait lens, no doubt, but once I started using the RF primes more, the Sigma just felt a little redundant. The rendering and subject separation from the Canon glass has a certain look that the 105mm, as good as it is, couldn’t quite replace.
In the end, I ended up letting the 105mm go. It’s a great lens if you don’t already own the RF primes, but when you do, it just doesn’t bring enough to the table to compete. For me, the RF 85 and 135 just feel more natural in the kit, and I never really missed having the 105 after it left.
