I appreciate the responses everyone. I can pick up the HVL 28RM or about $150 used so I think I may get it to experiment with. If anything it'll be an added dimension of annoyance for my kids.
For what I do...almost never. When I need light, I much prefer constant light so I can adjust, move, and adapt in real time vs trial and error. The advancements in constant lights are great
That said, I 100% prefer the look of natural light photos, especially for portraits. I've gotten very good at post processing my way past conventional issues, these cameras have a ridiculous amount of dynamic range. I like some shadows and depth.
If there is little light with flash you may get very wide pupils, an extra constant light will make them normal (small) again.
That's why I often use both kind of lights.
Only if I’m shooting an event inside. I bought a Godox system for my m43 as I was anticipating shooting a few events in 2020. Then the pandemic happened, so I’ve never used it. I don’t need it for the photography I do at the moment.

Not too far off, I’d say . If Ansel were still around, I’m sure he’d figure out a way to work these massive lights into his images. Either that, or we’d just let Photoshop/AI do the heavy lifting.

Old joke from the 1960s:
Q: What should I set my Instamatic on to take a flash picture of the moon?
A: Infinity.
I frequently use flash, studio strobes, or constant lighting. Always in manual mode. I like the creative options and problem solving power of working with lights.
In years past, studio lighting.. all of the time. Now, I use small flashes from Godox. Their latest small TTL It30 pro works great for fill flash. I’m currently using this flash with an A7CR and X2D. I also use small manual Godox flashes with my film cameras. I usually dial the flash down in order to produce a minimal effect. What makes the It30 Pro so nice is the small size and reliable function.
Yes, the same here, very nice little Flash the Godox iT30pro! In combination with the small X3 trigger, you have a small, but very useful light that you can easily take with you in your pocket.
