Z6III: quickly toggle subject detect on/off while tracking?

p.1 #1 · Z6III: quickly toggle subject detect on/off while tracking?

Riddle me this… I’m looking to track a subject using 3D tracking, subject/face detect on. But then quickly disable subject detect, and target another part of their body that is *definitely not their face* and track that as it moves within the frame (focus and recompose).

On the Z6 I can do this assigning “subject detect” to my Fn button, and assume the same is true for the Z6II. On the Z8/Z9 I can do this by disabling subject detect globally, but then using recall shooting function hold, I can assign enabling subject detect to a button, mimicking the Z6 behavior perfectly.

On the Z6III, closest I’ve gotten so far is disabling subject detect globally; assigning subject detect mode to My Menu; and assigning “My Menu first item” to an Fn button. Still requires that I choose a SD mode and confirm… but I’ll grant that I can do that without pulling the camera away from my eye, and it’s not the end of the world.

Still, it’s inarguably slower.Any of you geniuses have advice on something I’ve missed? Please do not suggest AF handoff to one of the non-subject detect modes - they do not track for focus and recompose.

On my Z6III I have subject detection options mapped to to the record button. I can quickly toggle between subject types or turn it off. Hopefully this helps.

^^^
This. The customization of the buttons on the current family Expeed engines (Z9, Z8, Z6iii) is vastly better than the previous bodies. Which must be a pure marketing ploy on the part of Nikon, because it takes close to zero compute power to remap buttons. If they were to do this few would buy the Z6iii, I certainly would not have gotten it.

None of which answers my question. But ok.

In this one specific example the earlier Z bodies had it better. And it just so happens it’s a cornerstone of my workflow.

Why use one of the Ux settings for this? Then it's one dial turn to do this. I do similar things like this on the Z5II.

Does the Z6iii have Recall Shooting Functions (hold)?

If so, just set up your AF Subject Detect options ONLY for that and dedicate a button to recall that setting of no subject detection. That's the typical get out of jail free card for hard to customize things.

No. I’m aware of the feature in the Z8/9 and did mention it in my original post.

I’d considered this and will play with it a bit. Thanks for suggesting a useful idea.

You can set this up now with firmware 2.00 since it added recall shooting function.

You sure can! Firmware 2 makes the camera near perfect for my uses and certainly increases the functionality dramatically. I’ve got RSFH set to Fn1 turning SD on now, and also Cycle AF Area set to Fn2 with only three AF area modes enabled. Super fast and easy cycling through everything now. Grateful Nikon listened.

That's great that the workaround is available now. Sure wish we could just toggle subject detect with a button, though.

Agreed, and I’ve conveyed as much to Nikon support. I suggest everyone who cares about this take the 5 minutes needed to write in as well. While you’re at it, ask them to add custom LUT uploads for the view assist

It does now with firmware 2.0
