p.1 #1 · Update on my Grandson's road trip w/ A7lll and Tamron 28-200
About a month or so ago I was asking questions here about this combo. My grandson, 18 yrs old, purchased it for his upcoming road trip. Well, he returned a couple nights ago. 32 days on the road with three of his buddies. 9,581 miles driven. 19 National Parks visited including two in Canada. 19 states and two provinces. It's hard to express how proud I am of him for organizing this and pulling it off. I could fill two pages with just the adventures and hikes he's told me about in the short time that I've seen him since he's returned but the point of this post was just to say the camera and lens worked out great for him. He's got about 8,000 images to go through but with his permission I just wanted to share a few. All with the A7lll and Tamron 28-200.
Thanks for taking a look !
Gary

What a trip! Looks like the 28-200 is a great all around lens. Just curious, did your grandson occasionally feel he needed something wider than 28mm? I guess in a pinch, one can always shoot a pano.

Not sure yet. I saw him yesterday at a family picnic so haven't had enough time sit down with him for a good talk. I did buy him the Tamron 20 2.8 but I don't know if he used that at all.

Gary, I started tapping into photography at approximately his age and his images now show that he has better/more keen eyes for photography than I had back then. Impressive!

Great to hear from you Joshua ! I see you've been doing some traveling of your own. Yeah, he's miles ahead of me at that age also.
Those words coming from one of, if not the best, all around photographers on these forums means an awful lot.
Take care my friend.

As with others, I was quite impressed, even though my first glance was a quick glance on my phone. It's a solid start! Like I really was clueless about the sleeping bag and it's colors - couldn't tell what it was! Although the guys at Devil's Tower jumped out to me though

Thanks Ross. I'll check back with him after he's had a chance to go through everything.

Some of us are just born different. The last photo is likely the most interesting composition I've seen this year.
That photo just blew me away. I need to ask him about it. Not sure if it was pure serendipity or if he actually saw that.

Great pics! And supports a reason you take a "real" camera with you when on an adventure where you're going to see a ton, and you never know what image you might want to print and hang on the wall to remember the trip. Nevermind all the other advantages a camera has over a phone. I'm guessing even at 18 this trip has made him a believer in having a camera vs. relying on your phone like a lot of teens/20-somethings.
And the lens choice looks like it was a good one, although like others I wonder if he found himself wanting to go wider much, and/or did he use the zoom range out past 100mm often? I'd be curious to know if he wished he had something like a 20-70 with him instead, or if this was the perfect combo for the need.

Great pictures. I loved the A7lll and Tamron 28-200 combo when I had it. When I updated to A7R5, I tried Tamron 28-200 but found the combo to heavy compared to my previous setup and did not like it as much.

Bullshit, sorry. 73 grams of difference are the difference between "lovely combo" and "too heavy"?

We went over a few different options. Of course there were going to be some compromises because of cost. We ended up with the Tamron because it seemed the best balance between price, quality, size, and range. He camped this whole trip except for a few days where he stopped in at a relative's along the way. Even if he could afford it he didn't want to be weighed down with a bunch of gear. I'd like to answer your questions but unfortunately I haven't had much of a chance to talk with him in depth. He did have the Tamron 20 2.8 with him but not sure yet if he used it much.

The 28-200 is my primary lens for western US "Great Outdoors" travel. I've recently added a 20-70/4 for urban use when I might not want to be dealing with lens swaps at 28mm.
