Shot a major sporting event today and when I transferred images off the cards I noticed that all of the capture dates were 12/31/1999. Camera has correct date set, so tried to take a new photo to see if the date is still off… and I am greeted with the message “Error. Turn camera off and then on again.”
An hour earlier, the camera seemed to work just fine (except for the capture date issue that I found later). Yesterday the images I captured had the correct date…
So I reset all settings, reflashed the firmware, and tried different cards, batteries, and lenses, all with the same result. The only time it will take a photo without the error is at very slow shutter speeds (1 second or longer). Even when it displays the error, it still records an image, however now it has the correct date.
The camera did have its main board replaced about 2 months ago, so I suspect the issue lies there. It has been rock solid with almost daily shooting until today. The main board was replaced after sending the camera in for the 10-pin connector to be replaced, Nikon said there was ‘additional damage’ that necessitated the board be replaced, but there was no mention of water damage. Since then, no drops, no rain, no other abuse or negligence.
Has anyone else run into this error behavior? I am sure it will need a trip to Melville but wanted to make sure I do everything I can to resolve the issue before sending it in…
