Hey all. I am looking to upgrade my camera in the next few months. My goal is to upgrade to a Sony mirrorless that has improved AF abilities. Currently I have a Sony A7r2 teamed up with the Sony 200-600 and Sony 1.4 ext. Right now I am torn between an improved A7r body like the r4 or r5 even a used A1( althought that would be a stretch for my budget) as compared with the a9ii...My only real concern is, will I miss the extra resolution of the r bodies? Do i crop some of my pics, yes at times, but not a lot. Right now birding is really all the photography that I really spend much time on, of course i still do occasional portraits and I know any of these cameras perform just fine for these. Any feedback would be appreciated, especially if you are birding with an A9 body. Thanks in advance.
I shot for years with the A9 and the 200-600 with the 1.4 and was very satisfied for birding. I now have the A1 but still use the A9 for a lot of photography. I don't know about the A7r5 but the A7r4 does not have good enough focus for fast moving birds. I'm sure others will chime in. Mike
Certainly can be enough. I shot for years with 18-24MP FF cameras including the A9 series and was happy. If you already don't crop too much then 24MP is enough for what most do with their images.
That said, if you can swing the cost of a used A1 it is such an amazing camera and having the 50MPs will surely be useful for bird photography.
Depends what you plan to do with the photos. I shot birds with the original A9 for years before getting an A1. I also cropped a lot and IIRC the smallest resulting image I ended up with as a keeper from the A9 was about 9MP, which is plenty big enough for an 8x10 or 9x11 print IMO.
Thank you all for your input. Much appreciated. Especially appreciate the thoughts on the Ar4. Good to know. Let's hope the A1 keeps dropping in price 😁
