I think you had the right elements here Jack and off to a good start, I would suggest if you do any light painting, don't use a headlamp. Most of those have an ugly blue-green color temperature that is not flattering. I would find a tungsten or other warm toned light source. Also the direction of the light fill makes a huge difference, next time try lighting from 90 degrees from the camera so you can get some side lighting that will bring out more contrast and texture. Also, you can get some small LED lights that can output different colors and I'd maybe place them in the some of the old structures to help create some depth and bring them to life. You may need to blend a sky exposure for the Milky way with another exposure(s) for the ground. It's all about being out there and experimenting and I'm sure you enjoyed your time out there. Maybe for next time, just some suggestions.
