I've only come across Cardinal flowers twice in my life. Apparently they are common, but not for me. Both times the water table had dropped drastically. First time was at a secluded 100 acre forest lake. The water level fell approximately three feet, and a 50-60 foot ring around the lake of millions of Cardinal flowers appeared on the patch of land formerly covered by water. I had been going to this lake for 50 years and never seen one before. Last night, on the edge of a swamp I saw one plant. The water table is currently down about two feet - even the river is low. So today I went looking for more on the margins of the swamp - success!

These are beautiful Jim! I have only seen them at the local gardens. Butterflies and hummers circle 'round them looking for nectar.
Nice images using the 400f5.6(and tc)...I have NOT mounted mine in many years! Need to remedy that!
Just beautiful up close and personal!

Thanks Dan. I wanted the reach for the plants a bit off trail. The ticks are bad this year so I don't like wading through the swampy meadow to get to some subjects. The closer subjects I used the Nikon gear where I could get closer. Still imaging yesterday's 521 photos.

Jim,
I am going to post an image with your indulgence...this photo was taken years ago at my local gardens.....I have only seen this plant there. It can be a small World sometimes.
Again super composition!

Dan,
Those colors look like Velvia. If I found some at a local nursery I would buy them quick smart. Here is just a corner of the 100 acre lake ringed with the Cardinal flowers. I found two days worth of files from that 2012 vacation of unedited files.
Jim.
Seeing them in "the wild" presents a whole different perspective for me Jim!
My image was from a beautiful manicured County garden, acres and acres of flowers, roses, shrubs trees....One might begin to think that the flowers are always grown, grow like that. Not so as you have shown!
Again schweet!
Dan
