p.1 #1 · Backup/fun body choices

Looking at trading/selling my Z50 now that I have a Z7 that can serve as a teleconverter on demand; and based on current KEH prices, think I may grab an F mount body just to use my old glass and for fun-

But which one?

The easy answer is a D750, a wonderful camera, the grown up version of the d7000 that I loved deeply. But I have a ZF, Z6, and Z7, so nit really getting anything new/weird here.

A D4 gives me that gorgeous sensor, but different batteries and cards.

A d810 is a different sensor at least?

And of course I can just keep the z50 as it’s wee and that can be useful….

Sounds like you're not considering film, but did you consider old-school FinePix S2 Pro or FinePix S5 Pro, etc?

What about the D700? I've not owned one, but everyone loves that camera. Great low light, great colors..

I looked at the Fuji's, but they are -old-- and flaking out The D700 or D4 may win, I really dig the D4 16MP sensor. And I have tons of film bodies but have realized I don't need more, having perfection in an M6 and F2.

Interesting that the D700 was only Number Two in the FX lineage.

I like my Z50 with the 26mm when I need a simple, small camera. D700 was good but chunky, if that doesn’t bug you using an OVF can be fun and different.

Because that's a pricey way to get worse autofocus I would love a DF buddy to my ZF, but a D4 is half what a DF goes for for the same sensor.

If your heart is set on the D4, and you accept the specs, then you are sure to enjoy it! My Nikon bodies include D500, D3X, D4 and Z6. The D4 is a tank, no question, but is a great performer with many features. One crazy ability is to connect a computer with Ethernet cable, and then visit the D4 website. You can even LiveView with your browser, set params, and shoot.

D7200 has ff like DR on Bill Claff's tests, plus is just impressive looking. Depending on if you are interested in aps

32gb cf card isnt much if you dont have any old ones, I could probably be ok if I had one decent battery on a D4.

The z50 isnt expensive might just keep it depending on if you are trying to af old screw drive lenses

D780 would be one to consider, though they were pretty low volume so finding a deal might be harder. In theory, I like the idea of Z6 experience with AF-D lenses though.

D500? In my experience, the best cropper Nikon made. If full frame, then the D800E. Beautiful sensor with fantastic color, great control.

D700, or D3s. Those SOOC colors are, well, unavailable anymore in modern equipment. And the 12MP files don't have you shopping for hard drives twice yearly.
I still shoot my D700.

If you want to dive on the "fun" facet of this, check out the Film Is Not Dead forum. Bonus points if you develop film at home.

Go with the D700 to save some money.. and then add a Leica M240/M-P 😄

Personally, I like the idea of the D4 or D3S but chose a D700 because of the size and weight. Even that one I sometimes hesitate to take over other options because it’s such a brick.. shame that Nikon never made a small full frame DSLR (no the Df doesn’t count)

I still use my D700 for product shots every week. I don't take it outside much anymore because it's kind of bulky for me personally.

It's really fun to use though. The tech is primitive but operation is fast and responsive enough to feel modern. Images from the 12MP sensor are gorgeous. It's a refreshingly simple camera that gives excellent results.

This is my setup for transferring JPG and RAW wirelessly. Every now and then the connection is a bit iffy but it beats messing with the card after each session.

I have the D700 and DF, and I found their color to be different. I prefer the DF's color more. But, I found the DF rangefinder indicator for manual focus lens is not accurate at all. If anyone have a tip/tricks to get the DF to nail focus with manual focus lens, I will consider buying another one. I am considering a DSLR the weight similar to DF but has better rangefinder indicator accuracy. I love the DF's sensor but I really don't want to go for the D4 just to get that sensor.
