p.1 #1 · Thypoch Manual M Lens Adapter Ring (For E, L, RF and Z mounts)

Thypoch just introduced a new series of M-mount positive-lock adapters, now available in five versions: M-E, M-L, M-Z, M-RF, and M-Arri. These adapters can be ordered through B&H Photo and Thypoch's official store.

They're designed to work with Thypoch’s own Simera, Eureka, and Simera-C lenses, but also support third-party options like the Cooke SP3 and Leica M0.8 lenses.

Some standout features include:

• Cinema-grade Positive-Lock Mount for a secure, wobble-free lens connection
• Dual-Lock Mechanism to increase stability, especially for heavier cine lenses
• Modular Detachable Handle for better handling and customizable control
• Wide Mount Compatibility, supporting mirrorless systems including Sony E, L-mount, Nikon Z, Canon RF, and ARRI
• ARRI-Specific Version tailored for integration with ARRI cinema cameras
• Precision Machining ensures solid construction and reliable performance in pro environments

This new adapter line is clearly geared toward filmmakers who need rock-solid lens support and cross-platform flexibility.

I wonder if Thypoch is moving this direction rather than offering their lenses (and adjusting the optical formula) for multiple mounts. The Simera 28 and 35 are available in a number of mounts, and the Simera-C cine lenses are available in Sony E mount. I wonder, however, if from this point on they will only make lenses for Leica M mount and provide adapters like these for other mounts.

Maybe! Now that they have released a complete set of f/1.4 lenses for most camera mounts, if they choose to make more compact and slower lenses that are less affected by sensor stack issues, adapters might become the best way to go.

I think this is the time line for the roll out of the current Thypoch lenses:

Fall of 2023 28mm and 35mm are introduced in Leica M mount

Spring of 2024 28mm and 35mm are introduced in Sony E, Nikon Z, Fuji X, and Canon RF mounts

August 2024 50mm Simera is released in Leica M mount

Fall 2024 28, 35, 50, & 75 Simera-C lenses are introduced and 21mm is announced in E mount

December 2024 Simera-C lenses are announced as being available in Leica M mount

February 2025 75mm Simera is released in Leica M mount

June 2025 21mm Simera is released in Leica M mount

Given this timeline and I think specifically when they introduced the Simera-C lenses in Leica M mount, that Thypoch may have decided to offer lenses in Leica M mount but not other mounts. The 50mm Simera has been available in Leica M mount for almost a year and yet no word whatsoever on it being offered in other mounts. I am thinking it might never be.

These particular adapters are specific to cinema applications, though. The PL mount is used in cinema to ensure lenses don't wobble when used with a follow focus (which exerts lateral pressure) as well as to reduce the risk that your $50,000 cine lens could fall off the camera (the locking mechanism in PL mount provides extra security compared with a simple bayonet).

It's easy enough to adapt M-mount lenses to mirrorless mounts, and Thypoch is best known in the M-mount world, so it's possible they'll just stick to M-mount. But I don't think anyone other than cinematographers would be buying these new adapters.

Yes, these adapters are primarily for cine applications, but I still see a possible shift in strategy at Thypoch. When they first came out with the 28 and 35 Simera lenses, they quickly brought them out in a wide variety of mounts. About the time they they brought out the Simera-C lenses to Leica M mount, however, they started touting the Leica M mount as being very adaptable. Now it seems quite unlikely that they will bring the Simera-C lenses out in any mounts other than the originally offered Sony E or Leica M. In addition there is no word that their stills lenses that they brought out in Leica M other than the original 28 and 35 Simera lenses will be brought out in anything other than Leica M mount, and the 50 Simera has been out for about a year and still no other mounts than Leica M.
It seems they may have decided that Leica M is very adaptable and there is no reason to offer any of their new lenses in other mounts. Only time will tell.

Looks promising, if a bit expensive. If the machining of these is as high quality as the lenses it might well be worth it.

Actually, the value is very reasonable for what you get. For instance, a standard Novoflex M to E mount adapter is the same cost. These Thypoch adapters look to be very well engineered to remove any play from the M lens. Hopefully they are well calibrated for infinity focus and have good lockup on the camera side as well.

I would agree with the assessment that these adapters are best suited for Cinema use and are less useful for still use. The protruding - and bulky -locking mechanism on the adapter seems likely to get in the way of an M still photo user, particularly when used with an M lens that has a focus tab (like Thypoch's own M still lenses vs their Cinema lenses).

Actually, if you look at the product page that Fred linked, it appears that the lever is removable and can be replaced with a low profile grooved insert. It’s a good design.

So the whole adapter is aluminum with no baffling or flocking on the inside? B+H says the adapter is aluminum - Thypoch website says 'Stainless Steel and precision CNC machining' (is Stainless Steel only used for screws and the retaining spring; but the rest is aluminum?; if the front Leica mount is SS - why is it black?). I don't know.... German Novoflex pricing but made in China...hmmm. I think I'll stick with Rayqual - half the Thypoch's price on Japan Amazon.

Edit: So I'm a little hasty/harsh in my evaluation? There's a locking mechanism - OK - so it prevents accidentally pressing the lens release button, unless you first unlock it? That's the innovation.
I see that the last (10th) spec. photo on Thypoch's product page shows that all the adapters are Aluminum 4061 and (a little) Stainless Steel 304. Except for the more elaborate Arri-PL-specific version that's all Stainless 304 - and it's $1229 instead of $219.
